Inauguration Day on campus

Large crowds formed around every big screen on campus as Barack Obama took the oath of office yesterday on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. These students took some time during the day to watch the proceedings in the Nestor Hall Lounge.
Find out how to complete your degree at Ohio U.
After only one quarter, nearly 100 Columbus State students have signed up for a new degree-completion program with Ohio University.
Under the program, which began in Autumn 2008, students can do three years of work at Columbus State, then take a final year of Ohio University courses to complete their bachelor’s degree. All of the OU courses are offered over the Web, so students don’t even have to leave Columbus.
The degrees available are currently the Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies and Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, although the two colleges are working on more degrees. The colleges are working to harmonize their courses so Columbus State credits transfer directly to Ohio University.
Columbus State specializes in two-year degrees, and many students get their associate degree here and then go on to earn a bachelor’s degree somewhere else. The Ohio University agreement is one of the first 3+1 agreements, however.

Columbus State student accepted at Yale

Brittany Blackburn with Professor Michael Hailu
She calls it "a dream come true." Brittany Blackburn has just been accepted to graduate school at Yale University. And her path to the Ivy League institution ran through Professor Michael Hailu’s chemistry classes at Columbus State Community College.
An honor student on scholarship at a state university, Blackburn had set her sights on a career in the medical field. That major required a heavy dose of chemistry courses, but Blackburn hated chemistry.
After disappointing results in an introductory course, Blackburn followed a friend’s advice and enrolled in a chemistry class at Columbus State. CHEM 173 was taught by Professor Michael Hailu, who would become not only a teacher but also a mentor to Blackburn. Soon she was loving chemistry as much as she had loathed it.
“Professor Hailu’s classes were never too dry or theoretical. He brought chemistry to life for us, illustrating how practical it is and how connected it is with everyday life,” reports Blackburn. “He expects a lot of his students, but he helps you develop the analytical tools to meet those expectations. He really wants you to succeed. I can honestly say that this A-student would not have made it through college chemistry—and not been on my way to Yale—had it not been for Professor Hailu and other instructors at Columbus State.”
Hailu, a native of Eritrea, is an Assistant Professor of Biological and Physical Sciences and the chemistry lead instructor at Columbus State. He has been a faculty member at Ohio’s largest community college for 14 years and appreciates Columbus State’s hard-working students—like Blackburn. The respect is mutual, as students have nominated him for the college’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
Blackburn asked Hailu to write letters of recommendation for graduate schools. She believes his detailed comments helped tip the scale in her favor at Yale. More than 3,000 people applied for next fall’s Physician Assistant class there; Blackburn was one of just 31 to be accepted.
Until she leaves for the Ivy League, Blackburn is working as a Patient Care Associate at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Center.

Digital Photography instructor writes two new handy guides to photography
Instructor Gene Strickland recently had two “QuickStudy” guides published by the familiar company that puts out the one-page, laminated guides to various subjects. Strickland had noticed that “of the 100s of topics covered for college students they did not have anything covering digital photography, which seemed misaligned with today's digital economy,” he said. “ It took almost a year to negotiate the deal and then another six months to research and write two new QuickStudy guides about digital photography and photography basics.” Look for those new study guides soon in the DX Bookstore!
