2009 Leadership Speaker Series to present Basement Doctor
The Columbus State Business Programs Department will host Ron Greenbaum, from J&D Basement Systems, best known as The Basement Doctor®, on Tuesday, October 27, from 1-2 p.m. in the WD Ballroom.
The lecture is part of the 2009 Leadership Speaker Series, and is free and open to students in order to allow them to hear firsthand how leadership is acquired and developed and what such leaders look for in selecting individuals with high leadership potential.
Greenbaum will address typical questions on leadership including:
-
Were there any catalysts—people or events—that were important to shaping your career?
-
What skills or areas should students focus or work on to best hone their own leadership potential?
-
What types of experiences have you had that have been most beneficial and others might be able to emulate?
-
What are the most challenging aspects; the toughest parts of being a leader?

Fur flies in the Library!

The Columbus State mascot, Clawdette Cougar, visited the Educational Resources Center (ERC) recently and tried her hand at pushing a book truck, reading a reference book and browsing the stacks. In a quarter where thousands are visiting the ERC for their homework needs each week, Clawdette recognized the value of having a great library that students can rely on. Happy studying, Clawdette!

Blood Drive Nov. 5 makes special request to minority donors

The American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive on Thursday, November 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nestor Hall East Lounge, with a special shout-out to minority donors. Why does donated blood matter which “race” it is?
When you mark the race category on your blood donor record, your blood can be tested to see if it is a “match” for someone with either a rare blood type or sickle cell disease. Your blood type is inherited just like the color of your eyes and hair. Some African Americans and members of other minority groups have rare blood types that are specific to their race, ethnicity or genetic background.
A single patient with sickle cell can receive up to 100 pints of blood each year to continue to live with the disease. Ideally the blood should come from individuals who are of similar ethnic or genetic background. For this reason, it is extremely important to increase the number of available blood donors from all ethnic groups. You might be a special match for a patient in need!
