Distance Learning Testing - Proctoring Services

Distance LearningWelcome to the Columbus State Community College Distance Learning program. If you live outside of Columbus State’s five-county service area and it is not convenient to drive to one of our testing locations, you will need to set up a testing location near your home by following the steps below.

STEP 1: Email your instructor for permission to test out of the area within the first two weeks.

STEP 2: Find a location for testing

    • Any accredited College/University
    • Company or Organization that has a testing operation
    • Public Libraries with testing operations
    • Proctor U (Only for students who reside outside of Central Ohio and who are enrolled in courses that administer tests through Blackboard). Please see the Getting Started with Proctor U section for more information.
      NOTE: Not all Professors who administer Blackboard Exams allow the use of ProctorU. Please contact your Professor(s) for approval to use ProctorU as your Out of City Proctor Site.

Call to check on availability, hours of operation, and cost per test. (Prices vary greatly, and the student is responsible for all fees.)

*Acceptable sites must be staffed by an employee where proctoring is a part of their daily duties and/or responsibilities for their position.

*All requested Testing Sites are reviewed to determine acceptability based on the CSCC Testing Center Requirements

STEP 3: Get information from your chosen testing location.

    • The name of the site
    • The complete address of the testing location
    • The name of the contact person (proctor)
    • The telephone number for the contact
    • The email address for the contact
    • Whether or not the site has Internet access

STEP 4: Fill out the CSCC Testing Center’s Out of City – Proctor Request Form.

Complete the electronic Proctor Request Form so the site verification process can begin. Please complete this process preferably no later than the first two weeks of the semester.

    • You will need to sign in with your CSCC username and password to complete a request form
    • All fields must be completed in order to successfully submit your request
    • Tests will not be sent until site has been approved
    • Site reviews may take 3-5 business days, possibly more for locations outside of the United States.

All locations found on this map have an established relationship with CSCC Testing Services. If there is not a location close to you, you may research and find a site that is more convenient. Once you have selected a location that fits your needs and made contact with a proctor to obtain their information, please submit the Out of City Proctor Request form found below in the next section. CSCC Testing Services will then receive and review your request. Reviews may take 3-5 business days, possibly more for locations outside of the United States.

Proctor U - Secure and Convenient Exam Monitoring

ProctorU is a virtual proctoring service for courses that administer exams via Blackboard. Exams will be taken on your own computer with a proctor monitoring you via the ProctorU website. Please note that not all Professors who administer Blackboard Exams allow the use of ProctorU. Please contact your Professor(s) for approval to use ProctorU as your Out of City Proctor Site. All testing fees and payments required by ProctorU are the responsibility of the student.

Getting Started with ProctorU

    • In order to utilize ProctorU, you must complete the following:
      • You are required to have a webcam with a microphone so you can communicate with the proctor. Almost any USB camera found at electronics stores can be used with ProctorU.
      • Check the Technical Specifications page (next to the sign-up link) to make sure your webcam and computer meet Proctor U requirements.
      • Watch the demo video in the "How it Works" section to get a better understanding of Proctor U services.
    • Create an account within ProctorU by clicking on the ProctorU link below and selecting "Sign Up" on the blue ribbon. Please register using your CSCC e-mail and valid phone number.
    • Once you have created an account within Proctor U, Submit the Out of City Proctor Request Form indicating your preference to utilize Proctor U for your testing needs (have your CSCC username/password)
    • Testing Services will notify you via CSCC student email each time an exam is available within Proctor U so that you can sign in and schedule your exam.
    • At the time of your exam type and click on the blinking button asking you to "Click Here to Start."

Students are required to complete an electronic Out of City Proctor Request Form each semester when using the Out of City service, whether testing at a traditional proctor location or electronically with ProctorU. Additional requests may be needed if a student’s first Site selection cannot be approved or if a student must change his or her testing location during the semester.

After Testing Services has received a student’s request, a Site review is conducted. This process may take 3-5 business days, longer for Sites outside the United States. Once a Test Site is confirmed to be acceptable and the exam has been submitted to the CSCC Testing Center by the Professor, a student’s exam will be sent either through e-mail or standard mail via the United States Postal Service. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Site to verify the exam(s) have been received and to schedule a testing time that will meet the Professor's deadline. Any fees charged for testing at the proctoring site are to be paid by the student.

Once a student’s request is approved and/or exams have been sent to a Test Site, any changes to his or her class schedule, test site or proctoring needs must be communicated directly to CSCC Testing Services. If this information is not received at least five business days prior to a proctored exam deadline, students must contact his or her professor.

CSCC Testing Services reserves the right to deny a proctoring site at any given time.
