The PediaSim represents the latest in the state-of-the-art simulation technology for training clinicians at all levels. It is the first of it’s kind in the world.
The PediaSim mannequin
represents the physical characteristics of a school age pediatric patient
[e.g., 6-8 years of age]. The mannequin can be placed on standard
operating room tables, ICU beds, on the ground and is fully operational in
the supine, sitting, lateral, and prone positions. The mannequin allows for
the physical demonstration of various clinical signs [e.g., heart/breath
sounds, palpable pulses, chest excursion, airway patency, etc.] which are
dynamically coupled with the mathematical models of human physiology and
pharmacology. The capabilities of the
PediaSim are almost identical to that of the
Human Patient
Simulator [HPS]. The only exceptions are that the PediaSim does not
have genitourinary capabilities or the trauma features of chest tube
output.
As with the HPS, various
patient types and scenarios may be run with the PediaSim. Some of the
scenarios that have been developed include the pediatric patient with an
acute asthma attack, an accidental drug overdose with a hypnotic, closed
head injury, and accidental electrocution. As with the HPS we have the
capability to create our own patient types and scenarios.
