To start the NURS
courses, you must be admitted to the nursing program. You may take
any of the support courses in the curriculum plan (except ENGL 202)
prior to acceptance into Nursing. Historically, most LPNs have most
or all of those courses completed before they start the NURS
courses.
Being offered
admission depends on space
being available. How long it takes an individual to meet criteria
varies depending on the number of requirements needed to finish and
the number of requirements completed each quarter. You should work
with an academic advisor in Advising and Counseling (AQ 116
614-287-2668) to see what that would look like for you. |

This varies, based
on the individual LPN’s work experience and previous education. An LPN may start with NURS 100 and NURS
110 which are offered in Autumn
and Spring quarters. An LPN may request prior learning assessment
and enter the program in the 2nd or 3rd
quarter of the curriculum plan. NURS 111, NURS 123, and NURS 132
(courses in the 2nd quarter of the curriculum plan) are
offered in Winter and Summer quarters. NURS 112, NURS 124, and NURS
133 (courses in the 3rd quarter of the curriculum plan)
are offered in Autumn and Spring quarters. NURS 109, the transition
course, is generally offered in Autumn and Spring quarters. |
How many hours do I have to have worked
as an LPN before starting the program?
|
The nursing
admission advisor and LPN talk together about the experience to
determine a good starting place to help with student success. There
is not a set number of hours that an LPN has to have worked to be
considered eligible for life experience credit for NURS 112, but
should have worked for some period of time beyond orientation. LPNs
without recent work experience (newly graduated and those who
haven’t worked in many years) need to take NURS 112. |

There are eight NURS courses in the
first three quarter of the Nursing curriculum plan. Your current
Ohio LPN license will earn you credit for many of these courses.
There is no further testing necessary as your license allows you to
receive “N” credit (life experience) through the Prior Learning
Assessment.
There are two NURS courses in the first quarter on the Nursing
program.
-
NURS 100-Physical Assessment of
all age groups. If you feel comfortable with your data
collection and assessment skills in this area, you can earn “N”
credit. There will be some review of this material in the LPN
transitions course.
-
NURS 110-Physical assessment
clinical course in a geriatric setting. There are concepts that
you wouldn’t have had which will be covered in the transitions
course. If you want to start with these two courses, you may.
There are two pharmacology courses,
one in second and one in third quarter.
There are two skills courses, one
in second and one in third quarter of the Nursing curriculum plan.
You can earn “N” credit for only the first of these two skills
courses. There is a skills review day of medication administration
concepts and new safety items in the Transition course. You will
need to take the second skills course, NURS 124, as it contains
skills that you are not permitted to do as an LPN in Ohio according
to Ohio law.
The clinical course in second quarter is Obstetrics with some Mental
Health (NURS 111). If you feel comfortable with this material, you
can earn “N” credit for this course. If you need a minor review, it
can be added into the Transition course.
There is a required exam (HESI) at the beginning of the fourth
quarter of the Nursing curriculum plan that covers the material from
the first three quarters of the Nursing program. All students must
attain a certain score in order to continue in the program. Those
who do not attain that score at the beginning of the quarter will be
offered a remediation class and be retested at the end of fourth
quarter. Obstetrics is an area that has a highly specialized
language and you can review it on your own. If, however, you feel
you need help from a class, it would be recommended that you begin
at this point in the curriculum plan of the Nursing program (NURS111).
There will be high risk OB content in the Transition course.
In the third quarter of the Nursing curriculum plan is a
medical-surgical clinical course (NURS112). LPN’s often choose to start
clinicals at this point, especially if they learn best by doing the
skills from the skills course relatively close to the time that they
initially learn the material.
Finally, other LPN’s wait to start clinicals until the fourth
quarter of the Nursing curriculum plan. Those with no recent
experience must take the clinical course (NURS112). All LPN’s will have
clinical courses in the fourth (NURS210), fifth (NURS211), sixth (NURS212),
and seventh (NURS213) quarters of the Nursing curriculum plan. There
are also opportunities in those courses for experiences with the
skills from the skills courses.
|
How do I get credit for non-NURS courses?
|
Have your school(s)/college(s)
attended send transcripts to Records and Registration, 550 East
Spring Street, Columbus, OH 43215. It may take 6 weeks for a
transcript to get out of one institution and into another for
evaluation. If transfer credit has been granted for a particular
course before, generally credit is awarded for all taking the
course. This is taken care of in Records and Registratrion. If no
one has tried for transfer credit of a course, you will need to
provide information (including course name, credit hours,
description and content) to the chairperson of the department that
teaches the course for which you want transfer credit.

Advising and
Counseling is located in AQ 116 and available by phone at
614-287-2668. Your academic advisor in Advising and Counseling
is your advisor until you are assigned an advisor in the nursing
program after you have been admitted. The academic advisor can:
-
Help you
learn what support courses will be awarded transfer credit
-
Direct you
to appropriate person(s) if you feel that you should be
awarded transfer credit for a particular course
-
Help you
plan what courses to take and the order to take them
|
How long will it
take me to finish the program?
|
This is very
individual. It depends on what courses you need and how many
you take at a time. Get your transcript in and once it is
evaluated you and your academic advisor can develop a specific
plan. You can take almost all of the courses in the curriculum
plan before starting the NURS courses. Realize then that you
are working on completing the program. |
How many NURS courses can I take at one time? Can I take more than one NURS
course at a time?
|
You will start
at a defined time in the curriculum plan and can only take those
NURS courses that are in the specific quarter of the curriculum
plan that you are in. That is, as an example, you cannot take
the NURS course from the 4th and 6th
quarter at the same time. NURS courses are taught sequentially
and build on previous courses.
