Columbus State Community College, K-12 Initiatives Department, is offering Kids-In-College (KIC), a Summer Day Camp, for kids entering the 4th, 5th, or 6th grade in September 2009. It is a two-week, hands-on, “college” learning experience where kids can discover the fun of computers, art, music, physical fitness, math, science, communication skills, and conflict resolution. Students will be able to participate in activities to help build self-esteem, explore exciting and somewhat non-traditional college and career opportunities, and spend time on a college campus in the heart of the Downtown Discovery District. KIC is taught by teachers & staff experienced with this age group. The youth will enjoy field trips, activities and performances by special guests and members of Columbus State Faculty.
Enrollment will be limited to 150 students to ensure quality and the desired class size (15 children per class) for this type of program. The program offers two separate tracks.
-
“Exploring the Future,” which focuses on art/art history, science/physical world connections, literature/creative writing, drama/self-esteem, physical education, health and fitness. The students in this track will have an opportunity to visit such places as the Kelton House / Underground Railroad tour, the Topiary Garden, or the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
-
“Tooling up for the Future” focuses on computer learning, robotics, mass communications, conflict resolution, the Internet, math, scientific methods, and environmental studies. The students in this track participate in an environmental stream monitoring field trip at Battelle Darby Metro Park.
