TThe Human Performance Center offers Active Living Every Day classes to both campus and community populations. Active Living Every Day (ALED) is a course that is designed to help the inactive adult adopt and maintain and physically active lifestyle. ALED was formed by a partnership between Human Kinetics and the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research. Several staff members of the HPC (see Meet the Staff) are certified ALED facilitators and have been teaching ALED classes for 1 year. The ALED course is designed specifically for the person who would like to become physically active but cannot find the time, motivation, or energy to get started. Unlike other fitness classes, in ALED there is very little exercise. The class time is spent teaching the skills needed to develop a physical activity habit. Each person starts and progresses at their own pace as the ALED course meets each individual where they are and progresses them comfortably to where they would like to be. A typical ALED session involves a review of the previous week’s session, a new skill (behavior or cognitive), group discussion, an assignment (short and easy), and a preview of the next session. All ALED classes are comfortable and non-threatening with a great deal of support for the participants. If you are interested in more information regarding ALED, please call Don Laubenthal at (614) 287-3627 or e-mail at dlaubent@cscc.edu.
