The Central District Ohio Junior Academy of Science expresses its appreciation for providing sponsored awards for Central District Science Day 2007 to:
Descriptions: Acoustical Society of America, Central Ohio Chapter (ASACC) -three awards: Certificates and cash (usually totaling $100, for example three award of $50, $30, and $20). CRITERIA - quality, use of scientific method and relative achievement in relation to age and grade for the following topics:
1. Architectural acoustics
(rooms, theaters, buildings). American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAAC) -Three awards are given. A $100 award for a high school student and two $50 awards for middle school students. CRITERIA - Sound scientific approach to research; innovative to research and materials relating to atmospheric and space flight, or propulsion. American Water Works Association (AMWAA) -$50 savings bond and AWWA Recognition Award. CRITERIA - All Science Day projects devoted to drinking water treatment, analytical techniques, and analyzing drinking water or other subjects of interest concerning drinking water are eligible for consideration for the Water Award. A superior project should be carefully designed and scientifically conducted. Projects should be creative, demonstrate proper use of scientific method, and incorporate accurate information and appropriate technology -Multiple $100 scholarships for Grade 7 girls to attend B-WISER summer camp. Central Ohio Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (COACM) -Two high school (10-12 grades) student awards: one $50 prize and one honorable mention. Two middle school (7-9 grades)student awards: one $25 prize and one honorable mention. CRITERIA - Project related to the computer which does not involve a game. Central Ohio Optometric Association - N.W. Vision Center (COOPA) -Four awards which include plaques and cash amounts for each. CRITERIA - Including psychological effects of color, color vision, how we "see", anything that uses the visual system as either a receiver or interpreter. Central Ohio Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (COPPAMA) -Awards: First place ($100), second place( $75) and third place ($50), and Honorable Mention. -Criteria: Grades 7-12: Project must be aviation related design or testing of airfoils, power plants, propellers, or rockets. Columbus Dental Society (CODES) -Three savings bonds of $50 each awarded to projects in dental science. Columbus State Community College (CSCC) -Award: A total of 5 plaques will be awarded, distribution determined on judging day. Criteria: B. Teachers nominate one student from each school to insure adequate judging. We would ask teachers to give strong consideration to students who have not applied for other awards. This award recognizes students with outstanding scientific abilities and encourages them to reach higher next year. -Two cash awards: $50 for high school student (grades 9-12) and $25 for middle school student (grades 6-8). CRITERIA - Innovative use of plastic materials in a research project. -Five $200 awards. Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Young Scientist Award. These awards are for 11th and 12th graders. Health Physics Society, Buckeye Chapter (HPSBC) Ohio Society of Professional Engineers - Franklin County Chapter (OSOPE) -Three certificates of merit and cash awards of $150, $100, and $50. Department of Linguistics, The Ohio State University (OSULI) - A $60 award and certificate for the best high school project and a $40 award and certificate for the best middle school project. CRITERIA - Best projects involving: 1) the investigation of some aspect of the nature of language (looking at sounds, words, sentences, or meaning,) or 2) the investigation of the analysis of language, the perception of language, or the production of language, or 3) the examination of language as it changes through time or varies dialectally across a population. Ohio Water Environment Association (OWENV) -Ohio Water Environment Science Award CRITERIA -All Science Day projects devoted to stream water quality, water pollution, or waste water treatment are eligible for consideration for the Johnny Clearwater Award. A superior project should be carefully designed and scientifically conducted. Projects should be creative, demonstrate proper use of scientific method, and incorporate accurate information and appropriate technology. Examples of winning projects are: Ground Water Pollution, Methane Gas Production, Modeling Pollution Effects on a Stream, Industrial Wastes in a Stream, Agricultural Run-off Pollutants, Study of Lake Pollutants, Wastewater Treatment by Biological/Chemical Processes and Filtration, Phosphorus Treatment/Removal, Ammonia Treatment/Removal, and Sludge Treatment and Utilization. $100 savings bond. One year free subscription to Scientific American to five outstanding projects. Sigma XI Scientific Society (SIGXI) -looking for "outstanding scientific projects" in any scientific discipline. Eight awards to be given: Four to grades 6-7; Four to grades 10-12. Awards include a metal, a certificate, and a $100 cash award. Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) -Three savings bonds in $100, $75, and $50 amounts for best projects dealing with waste reduction, recycling, composting, landfill, waste to energy, waste minimization, and reuse of materials. Southwest Ohio Water Environment Association (SWOEA) -3 awards for superior science projects relating to enhancement of water quality and/or the preservation of water resources. The following awards will be given: $50 for 7th and 8th grade; $75 for 9th grade and 10th and $100 for 11th and 12th grade
