 Overview

Biology 105 (Field Experience in Marine Biology) was designed as part of the College’s strategic goals to internationalize the curriculum.  As such, the course is a unique blend of marine science and tropical ecology enhanced with cultural and historical experiences.

Enrolled students study at The University of the West Indies world-renowned marine biology laboratory at Discovery Bay Jamaica, West Indies.

The course enhances concepts studied in Biology 104 (Marine Biology) by providing hands-on activities in a diverse, pristine, marine environment. The on-site laboratory facilities allow for further detailed scientific examination of marine concept.

Significant ecological field trips expose participants to tropical rainforests and the unique vegetation and wild life found on the island. Unique geologic features of Jamaica are also explored through hicks to magnificent waterfalls and spelunking through caves.

Further, Students are immersed into the Jamaican culture. Multiple field trips to various cities and towns expose students to the diverse culture and economy of this area of the West Indies. Students are encouraged to experience the area not as tourist but as Jamaicans. Several historic sites are included as part of the experience to leave our students with an overview of the rich and vast history of the area.

In 1498 Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica on his second trip to the new world. He landed not far from were our students now study at Discovery Bay. It is my hope that Columbus State’s students who participate in this experience will arrive in Jamaica with the same adventurous sprit, curiosity and thirst for knowledge and discovery that lead our namesake there on his explorations.
