Notebook
Organization
- Use a 3-ring notebook large
enough to hold all necessary materials.
- Keep a plastic pouch in the
front of your notebook to hold your school supplies.
- Using dividers, separate
your notebook into sections according to subject.
- Within each section keep:
- A pocket folder.
Label the inside left pocket "To be Completed or
Graded". Label the inside right pocket "Graded
Papers".
- A spiral notebook or
notebook paper. When spirals are used, it is easier to
keep notes together. However, it is important that each
spiral be used only for the subject for which it is
intended.
- Date and punch holes in all
papers handed out and place them in the proper section of
your notebook, or in your pocket folder.

Note-Taking
- Date your notes! As soon as
you sit down in your classroom, open your notebook and write
down the date.
- Take notes on what your
teacher discusses in class. If you are listening,
participating , and taking notes, you are increasing your
ability to absorb the material.
- Keep your notes up-to-date.
If you were absent prior to that class date, leave enough
blank pages so you can fill in with notes you borrow from a
classmate, and copy.
- Star important items in your
notes. When taking notes, always write down and highlight,
underline, or star items which your teacher says are
important or are ones to know for a test.
- When taking notes, use
abbreviations whenever possible.
- Make correction ON your
homework, quiz, or test papers using a red pen, when grading
them in class. Review your errors!
- Keep all notes, handouts,
and tests from previously completed units in a portable file
box which has been divided according to subject. These will
come in handy for reference and semester exams.
