Columbus State's mission of community service provides an exciting opportunity to lead Central Ohio in a new and worthy endeavor by forming a new academic and community synergy, the CSCC Institute for Public Safety & Health. Columbus State is uniquely positioned to take a lead role in this effort to bring all public safety and health stakeholders to the table for an integrated response to the continuing education needs of public safety and health responders and their support team.
Since its inception, the Institute Steering Committee has met five times to develop the attached Mission Statement and strategic goals and objectives. Training needs have been identified in Emergency Management, Fire, Law Enforcement, EMS, crisis intervention programs, 911 communications/dispatching, Hazardous Materials Incident Response and Environmental Technology. The added resource of Columbus State's credit programs is being tapped to meet the identified needs. Emergency Operations Center related training and initiatives, workforce development/career services and Continuing Education Unit tracking and coordination have also been identified as ways in which the Institute can support the training and education needs of the community.
MISSION: To continually assess and integrate the continuing educational needs of Ohio’s public safety forces, health organizations, and support teams by providing training that relates to the mandates of emergency response and Homeland Security.
As the Institute develops its resources, curriculum, and subject experts, it will assess the additional public safety training needs of other public agencies, such as other colleges, public and private K-12 schools, government agencies and private corporations, to increase their own awareness level and operational capacity.
