  • What’s the difference between Basic English and the credit ESL courses at Columbus State?

The Basic English classes are noncredit, which means they do not provide college credit and do not count toward earning a college degree.  Also, the credit ESL courses are at a higher skill level than the Basic English courses.  Many prospective ESL students who attempt to enroll in credit classes at Columbus State are directed to our Basic English program in order to improve their English language skill before they are permitted to take the COMPASS©/ESL exam.
