English 102 Proficiency Examination Procedures

Some students may be able to receive credit for Essay and Research (ENGL 102) based on the research techniques and writing skills they have gained from work in other courses or on the job.

To receive proficiency credit for Essay and Research (E102), a student must complete the following review and testing process.

1. Student should go to the Cashier’s Office in Madison Hall and pay the fee for the Proficiency Examination.

2. Student should bring the receipt from Step One to the Communication Skills Department in NH 420 along with at least two research papers that the student has written either for courses at post-secondary institutions or for work.

The submitted papers will be reviewed to ascertain the student’s experience in writing research papers. If this experience is judged acceptable, the student may proceed to Part Two of the proficiency test.

If the research experience is judged insufficient, the student will be denied proficiency credit and will be encouraged to take Essay and Research (ENGL 102).

3. . Once Step 1 has been certified "acceptable," the student should schedule an appointment (in advance) with the department secretary to take the second part (Step Two) of the proficiency examination. The student should plan for at least two hours of uninterrupted time. Once the test has been started, it may not be interrupted without invalidating the test. The test may not be removed from the testing area without invalidating the test.

Before the test, the student should request a copy of the course syllabus, unit plans, “Communication Skills Style Sheet,” and minimum proficiency standards to review. The student should be familiar with the bibliographical forms and documentation practices set forth in the 1995 edition of the Modern Language Association’s MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and in Edward Martin's A Guide to Writing Papers. Some of these bibliographical forms are illustrated on the “Communication Skills Style Sheet.”
