Theatre Columbus State presents Recent
Tragic Events
As the Theatre's final offering in this
season's theme of "Defining Moments: Crisis
in America," director Nancy Kephart presents
Craig Wright's comedy-drama about the day
after 9/11.
The play begins as a sitcom about a young
woman, a blind date, and an apartment
building of wacky tenants in Minneapolis.
Then it veers from the comic to the cosmic,
as the characters grapple with questions of
determinism and free will. Critic Ben
Brantley of The New York Times
remarked that "It's as if Pirandello had
been hired to do the season finale for
Friends.''
Its crackling dialogue and off-kilter take on
large philosophical divides earned Recent
Tragic Events a 2003 nomination for the
Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play
and the 2003 Steinberg New Play
Commemorative Citation from the American
Theatre Critics Association.
The cast of Columbus State students include
Rachel Fulmer, Casey May, Eden May, David
Socolov, and Sky Sharma.
