Capstone in
Communication Skills - ENGL 290
To receive an Associate of
Arts or an Associate of Science degree from
Columbus State, you will be required to
complete a capstone course in one of five
departments: Math, Natural Science,
Humanities, Communication Skills or Social and
Behavioral Sciences.
When you take English 290, the
Communication Skills Capstone Course, you get
the opportunity to review the composition,
speech, literature and communication courses
you have completed; to reflect on the ways
these courses have enhanced your current level
of knowledge and skill; to demonstrate how you
have achieved the General Educational Outcomes
defined by the College; and to formulate
future career and academic goals.
The ENGL 290 Capstone Course
is designed to help you
assess your development as a
student of communication, composition,
speech, and literature;
provide a convenient
collection of materials that will make
applying for a job or to four year colleges
much easier;
make available samples of
your best work to your advisor or other
faculty writing reference letters for you,
enabling them to write more informed,
detailed, and supportive recommendations;
become more aware of the
employment and degree opportunities
available through pursuing a degree in
English or Communications;
become more conscious of the
coherence of your Communication Skills
courses.
By completing the capstone
course, you will assist the Communication
Skills Department by
giving us a sense of your
experiences in courses throughout the
department;
helping us assess the
usefulness and effectiveness of individual
courses and our program as a whole;
helping us demonstrate to
senior institutions that our graduates come
to them equipped with the knowledge and
skills required to complete advanced
degrees;
providing us with specific
details that can be invaluable in writing
recommendations.
