Auditions announced for Recent Tragic Events
Theatre Columbus State has announced a casting call for its summer production of Craig Wright's drama Recent Tragic Events, on Monday June 2 and Tuesday June 3, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in Nestor Hall Auditorium.

The 5th Annual Columbus State Writers Conference scheduled
In our global village where news can travel instantly and anyone can be a "citizen reporter," it's important to stop and examine the modes, methods, and mechanisms in the 21st century writer's toolbox. This year's conference, "Reality Writing: Worlds to Words," will give writers the opportunity to experiment with these tools and put them to work.

Communication Skills hosts Theatre Workshops
Directors, actors, stage managers and acting coaches will gather in Nestor Hall on Saturday, April 26, 2008, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., to offer six workshops on the art of theatre, in addition to a lunch and panel discussion.

Author Gretchen Hirsch discusses "Time Management for Real Writers"
The Visiting Authors Workshop series presents noted (and prolific) non-fiction author Gretchen Hirsch speaking on the topic "But There's Never Any Time to Write: Time Management for Real Writers." The workshop is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, March 29, from 2:30 to 4:00 on the ground floor seminar room area of Nestor Hall.

Theatre Columbus State director Frank Barnhart takes award
The 8th Annual Central Ohio Theatre Roundtable Awards presented its 2007 Excellent in Directing Award to Frank Barnhart, for his production of the Triangle Factory Fire Project, presented last autumn by Theatre Columbus State.

Theatre Columbus State presents A Raisin in the Sun
Lorraine Hansberry's groundbreaking 1959 drama A Raisin in the Sun opens Wednesday, February 27, on the Columbus State campus and continues with nightly performances and a matinee through Saturday, March 1, under the direction of James Kevin Mathis.

Theatre Columbus State presents The Triangle Factory Fire Project
In keeping with the Theatre's theme of "Defining Moments: Crisis in America" this season, director Frank Barnhart presents Christopher Piehler's The Triangle Factory Fire Project. This ambitious production concerns an historic 1911 catastrophe that killed 186 immigrant factory workers in Manhattan.

Professor Lee Martin was the first presenter for the 2007-2008 season of the Visiting Authors Writing Workshops, speaking on "If It Doesn't Matter to the Writer: The Art of Urgency in Creative Writing."  A full schedule of other Saturday workshops has been released for the rest of the year.

The department's writing faculty is joining with the national Make a Difference Day effort, with a contest offering four $500 prizes to Columbus-area students. It's called Envisioning Possibilities: A Writing Workshop & Essay Contest.

Theatre Columbus State announces its 2007 - 2008 productions
Four dramas on the theme of "Defining Moments: Crisis in America" have been selected for the Theatre's new season. The first production, in November, is Christopher Piehler's The Triangle Factory Fire Project, about the historic 1911 catastrophe that killed 186 immigrant factory workers in Manhattan. Theatre Columbus State presents Parallel Lives
Theatre Columbus State will recreate Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney's hilarious send-up of the plight of women and the battle of the sexes in modern America. San Francisco critic Chad Jones has called this show "pointed and funny, compassionate and extremely human."

At a March conference in New York City, the Communication Skills Department received an Outstanding Program in English Award from the Two-Year College English Association of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Poet Colette Inez conducts writing workshop
Colette Inez, author of nine volumes of poems and winner of the Guggenheim and the Rockefeller awards for poetry, was the special guest at the Department's final Visiting Author Workshop for this academic year.

Creative writing faculty schedule a spring writers conference
Columbus State's annual conference for creative writers, "Genres and Generations: Writing Through the Ages," is scheduled for April 27-28 on campus, and will feature keynote speaker Walter Mosley.  Professional writers will present workshops on fiction, poetry, children's literature, screenwriting, agents and a variety of other topics.  The registration fee is $60 ($20 for students), and the conference is open to the public.

R.E.A.D. tutor joins Writing Center staff
The Writing Center and the Office of Disability Services have collaborated to bring a new tutor to the Writing Center staff to assist students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Dayna Moebius from Columbus Literacy Council's Reading Enhancement for Adult Deaf (R.E.A.D) program will work in the Writing Center on Friday mornings, starting January 12.

Teleconference brings children together from Ohio and Australia
Professor Rita Bova of the Communication Skills department hosted an "Aboriginal Author" project last spring, enabling elementary students from different continents to visit by teleconference while listening to readings from two books about their native cultures.

Department offers degree in one of the "Best Jobs in America"
Money Magazine has named the profession of Technical Writer as the 13th (out of 50) best job in America, with a predicted 10-year growth rate of over 23% and starting salaries in the $50,000 + range.  The department's Technical Communication program offers the only degree in this field available in central Ohio.
