Balancing classes, family responsibilities, a job (or jobs), an internship, homework and co-curricular activities can be tough. So when the topic of finding a mentor comes up, many college students shrug off the idea because there just aren't enough hours in the day.

You may also be wondering, "Do I really need a mentor?"

The answer is dependent upon your goals and your level of engagement for your future career. Mentoring is important, not only because of the knowledge and skills students can learn from mentors, but also because mentoring provides professional socialization and personal support to facilitate success in school and beyond. Quality mentoring greatly enhances students' chances for success. Utilize your resources and learn about the variety of mentoring programs available at C-State, and why you may want to be involved as a mentee or mentor.

Veteran and Military Services

The Columbus State Military & Veterans Services Department provides individualized enrollment and referral services to assist community members in successfully meeting their educational and career goals. We are committed to providing uncompromising service by adhering to the highest standards of compassion, commitment, excellence, professionalism, integrity, accountability and stewardship. The Scholar Network

The Columbus State Scholar Network (SCCN) provides current and former foster youth with a network of support during your college journey. Columbus State's Scholar Network includes ongoing mentoring with a professional, peer-to-peer mentoring, monthly Lunch & Learn Workshops, peer-to-peer support and other campus resources. Students who actively participate as Scholars are eligible to receive scholarships (stipends) and other valuable incentives to help build student success. The core objectives of the program are designed to support students in building community, developing skills and gaining the confidence needed to succeed in college



The GOT Network

GOT Online Mentors can help point you in the right direction. As a first generation student, you can sign up for an online mentor. Once connected, you can feel free to ask your mentor via email any questions you may have about being a college student. Further, your GOT Online Mentor will be your advocate while you are at Columbus State. To sign up for a GOT Online Mentor or to learn more, email got@cscc.edu and indicate that you're interested in having a mentor. One of our GOT Contacts will email you right back!

*A GOT Online Mentor is not designed to replace or serve as your academic advisor. Instead, consider your mentor someone who know your struggles as a first generation student and is willing to help in your academic endeavors.



• The Man Initiative

The Male Access Network (M.A.N.) Initiative is a student engagement program offered by the Global Diversity and Inclusion Center (GDIC) with an emphasis on character-building and leadership development. This program is intended for male-identified students at Columbus State who are interested in getting involved on-campus, connecting with other Columbus State men, and receiving mentorship opportunities. Participants may also be eligible for a scholarship in the Autumn and Spring semesters.



• Women's Connection

Women's Connection focuses on fostering character building, leadership development as well as personal, intellectual and relational growth of participants. Opportunities are provided for students to network and build relationships with their peers and employee mentors. Participants engage in visible activities on campus and the Columbus community while accessing resources to make strategic decisions about their future. Any student currently enrolled in classes at Columbus State and identifies as "female" is eligible to participate in Women's Connection. For the inaugural semester there are 30 available slots. Students are accepted into the program on a first come first serve basis after completing an application with the Department of Global Diversity and Inclusion.



Student Ambassador Leadership Program

The Student Ambassador Leadership Program is directed by Student Engagement and Leadership(SEaL). It provides an incredible co-curricular experience that aims to equip students with knowledge, skills, experience, and attitudes needed to be 21st Century Leaders. Student Ambassadors achieve academic success with a minimum of 2.8 G.P.A.; throughout the Student Ambassador Leadership Program, students are paired up with a mentor and develop into a growing and impactful community of learners, leaders, and achievers. Participants in the program are consistently representing and promoting the face of the Columbus State, including, sharing their cougar pride through campus programming and working within departments and offices. These student leaders can also be seen off campus leading and participating in a variety of civic engagement opportunities.



• The Honors Program

Columbus State's Honors Program gives high-ability students in Arts & Sciences, or Career & Technical programs the opportunity to join a community of like-minded individuals who desire the benefits of rigorous curriculum and heightened student and faculty interaction, including Faculty mentorship, providing one-on-one interaction with your assigned faculty mentor. Students who complete the Honors Program application and are admitted into the program will automatically be considered for an Honors Program scholarship (up to $2,000 per academic year, renewable for two years). No additional scholarship application is required.



Career Services

Columbus State's Career Services Mentorship Program is designed to provide you with a formal channel to develop relationships with professionals employed in your field of interest! By joining the program and receiving a career mentor, you can gather information related to your chosen career, get a realistic view of the daily tasks, rewards, and challenges, establish an ongoing relationship with a professional in your field, and improve your communication skills. Participants in the program, called "mentees," will meet with their mentors at least once a month during the academic year.


 

Student Support Services

The goal of the Student Support Services Program at Columbus State is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and facilitate the process of transition from one level of higher education to the next. Eligible participants in the program will have the opportunity to receive one to one advisement on a regular basis, access to tutoring, mentoring and many other academic related support services. SSS is committed to helping you achieve your educational goals, "Let SSS become a vital part of your academic success here at Columbus State."
