Self-Defense Training Program

This empowering self-defense training for both men and women combines fitness training and martial arts, and is taught by experienced instructors on the Columbus Campus. You can take one or two classes, or progress through the levels of this free training, learning valuable techniques to keep yourself and others safe.

Level One: Grey Shirt –Participants begin at this level

You will learn beginning techniques including:

  • Break Falls and Rolls
  • Wrist Grabs
  • Push Kicks
  • Clinch Takedowns
  • Offensive Hip Throw
  • Trap and Roll, and more

The moves are suitable for beginners with no prior self-defense training.

Level Two: Yellow Shirt – advance after completing 20 Grey Shirt classes

You will learn intermediate techniques of self-defense including:

  • Distance Closing Takedown
  • Mount Stabilization
  • Mata Leon Strangle
  • Punch Block Series
  • Guard Retention/Get Up
  • Body Triangle
  • Wrist Release, and more

Level Three: Green Shirt – advance after completing 20 Yellow Shirt classes

You will learn more advanced techniques including:

  • Stand Punch Defense to Clinch
  • Jab, Cross, Hook, Muay Thai Push Kick
  • Muay Thai Clinch Knee
  • Two Takedowns
  • Side Control
  • Guillotine and Kimura Combo
  • Armlocks, and more

Level Four: Blue Shirt – advance after completing 20 Orange Shirt classes

The most advanced self-defense training, including:

  • Sweeps from Half-Guard
  • Sweeps from Guard
  • Submissions from Mount
  • Live Action Flow Drills

About the Instructors


Sean FosterSean Foster

Officer Sean Foster is a law enforcement professional with nine years of municipal and college law enforcement experience. He has been a Police Officer for the Columbus State Police Department for the past five years. Foster is certified as a Defensive Tactics and Impact Weapons Instructor through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and conducts regular in-service defensive tactics training. He also competes in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and as an amateur Mixed Martial Arts athlete in Ohio.

Jason AptJason Apt

Jason Apt is an athletic conditioning and recreation specialist at Columbus State. Apt earned his associate degree in Sport and Exercise Studies from CSCC, his Sport Management from Union Institute and University, and his Master’s degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania. He is also a USAW Olympic Lifting Coach. Apt has worked for Columbus State for eight years and serves as the head strength coach for the Athletics Department. Apt also has more than 20 years of martial arts training in Karate, boxing, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.

Devan Quitt'erDevan Quitt'er

Devan Quitt'er is a preschool teacher in Grandview and is also an ASL interpreting student at Columbus State. Her background in Martial Arts is extensive and includes over six years of wresting and she trains in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Ronin Training Center. She competes internationally in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the GF Team in Columbus, Ohio under Vitor Oliveira and was the IBJJF Chicago International Champion in 2016. Devan also trains individually with Coaches Jason and Sean to continually improve her skills.
