Society of Compass recipients named

Six students were awarded the annual Society of the Compass recognition at a ceremony held last week. The Society of the Compass distinction allows faculty and staff to recognize students who have demonstrated extraordinary achievements during their time at Columbus State.

Membership in the Society of the Compass represents the successful achievement of the four compass points that serve as the foundation of the Society: Nobility, Excellence, Service and Wisdom. The students will also be recognized at the Spring Commencement May 12.


Reminder: Men of Year Awards are tonight

The Men of the Year Awards will be held tonight, Wednesday, May 3, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom. The event includes a dinner and the awards ceremony. Family and friends are welcome to attend. For more information contact Brett Welsh, at ext. 6296.

Writers Conference is May 6

The 14th Annual Writers Conference, hosted by the English Department, will be held Saturday, May 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Columbus State Conference Center, fourth floor WD.  The conference is free and open to the public.

The keynote presentation will be given by Columbus native Maggie Smith, freelance writer and editor. In addition to the keynote, the Writers Conference offers a diverse selection of workshops with other accomplished writers, and a book fair with university and independent presses, writers, and writing groups. Student Leadership Awards are May 5

Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL) will host the 2017 Student Leadership and Service Awards on Friday, May 5, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Columbus State Conference Center Ballroom, fourth floor WD. The awards are an opportunity for the college to recognize the achievements of student leaders, student organizations, and faculty advisors for their service to the Columbus State community. Light refreshments will be served. To attend, RSVP online at the Hub.


Gospel Ensemble to perform May 4

The Columbus State Gospel Vocal Ensemble will present "Originally Yours," Thursday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Nestor Auditorium. The free concert will include original songs written by the Ensemble and other local composers.  An extended community-wide choir of more than 30 voices was assembled for the concert. Special guests include the legendary songwriter and pianist, Martha Abbott, local recording artist Vanessa J., Tanya Payne, Wenona Williams, and jazz guitarist Bob Waters. The evening promises to be an uplifting end-of-term experience.  The Gospel Ensemble is under the direction of Emma L. Easton.


Chorus to perform on May 7 at museum

Chorus Columbus State will perform its Spring Concert at the Columbus Art Museum on Sunday, May 7, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. The Chorus will perform “Bach Cantata No.4 - Christ lag in Todesbanden,” and the “Faure Requiem.”  Both works will be with a chamber orchestra made up of members of the community and various symphonies in the area.


Madison sidewalk closed for construction

The sidewalk on the north side of Madison Hall (between Madison Hall and Eibling/Nestor halls) will be closed due to a roof replacement project, from Tuesday, May 2, through Friday, May 26. The sidewalk will be blocked and a dumpster will be located on the site. 


Union Hall Food Court closed summer semester

The Union Hall Food Court will be closed this summer to allow for a complete renovation of the kitchen. The last day of service in the Food Court is Friday, May 12. During summer semester, you will be able to eat at the new Subway restaurant in the Bookstore, at Sips@Davidson coffee bar, and at Tortilla food truck. The renovations will be completed at the start of fall semester.
