VOLLEYBALL: GET IN THE GAME!

Follow the tournament on:

Sept. 15 -- With a deep bench and an 11-1 opening record, the Columbus State volleyball team has shot up to No. 1 in the rankings.

The Cougars were ranked No. 1 after knocking off the No. 1 team in the country, Kishwaukee College of Illinois, at a tournament in Toledo Sept. 3-5. Kishwaukee is last year’s national champion – and the team that eliminated Columbus State from last year’s tournament.

“That was a big step up for us,” said Kristin Bergman, a 19-year-old middle hitter from Mariastein. “We needed that confidence boost.”

“It was good payback,” agreed Morgan Zumberger, a 19-year-old defensive specialist from Logan County.

This year’s squad is stacked with talent, including 5 returners and a slate of talented freshmen.

“We could put just anyone out on the court and they’d play tough,” Bergman said.
Coach Scott Nichols said the team is coming together earlier in the season. Last year, they stumbled during the season but put together an impressive run to the tournament.

“It’s early, and we need to be able to compete at the end of the year,” Nichols said. “Hopefully this is not the best volleyball we’re going to play this year.”

It’s hard to pick standouts, but Jackie Randulic led the team in kills in Toledo. Zumberger led in digs, and Bergman and Kelley Lefeld posed threats from the hitting positions.

The Cougars moved up to NJCAA Div. II a few years ago, making the players eligible for scholarships. Bergman plans to transfer to Ohio State and study psychology, and Zumberger plans to study nursing at Mt. Carmel.

Since the move, the team has been quickly gaining respect. This is the first year Columbus State will take on the varsity teams of four-year schools (in the past, the Cougars have played four-year schools’ JV squads).

They play Otterbein College, Denison University, Thiel College and Ohio Wesleyan University on Sept. 18.
