Student Session Descriptions

Check-In
Make sure to plan to arrive on time so you can take advantage of all of resources. You will have the opportunity to get your orientation materials and other important CSCC documents.

Welcome Session
Enjoy the orientation kick-off with fellow students and guests and meet your Orientation Leaders. During the welcome you will learn about academic and financial responsibilities of being a CSCC student as well as how to become an active member of the Columbus State Community.

Session I
You will be able to choose from one of five options:

    • Resource Fair/Cougar ID-  Representatives from many Columbus State Community College Student Service offices will eagerly waiting share more information about how to fully take advantage of your time as a student. You will also have the opportunity to take your photo for your Cougar ID!
    • Financial Aid-  Representatives from the Financial Aid office will be on hand to answer questions about the FAFSA, your Financial Aid award letter, Student Satisfactory Progress Rates, and much more!
    • Academic Support-  Representatives from Academic Advising will be available to answer questions about the transition to Columbus State Community College, and what to expect while attending the institution.
    • Career Development-  Representatives from Career Services will be present to discuss any questions regarding how Program, Major, or Certificate selection can impact careers.
    • Disability Services - Representatives from the Disability Services office will present on accommodations in college and how to receive the accommodations.

Session II
You will be able to choose from one of six options:

    • Campus Tour-  Led by one of our Cougar Crew members (orientation leader), you will get to walk around and view the Columbus State campus.  Feel free to ask where various departments are located, or for odd facts about CSCC and the campus!

Small Group Breakout
With guidance from the Orientation Leaders (OLs), you will meet and interact with your peers in an engaging small group environment. You will learn about campus resources and get excited about being a Columbus State student.

Moving Forward
Members of our academic advising team will provide an overview of the varying pathways within Columbus State and how your Major, Program, or Certificate can fit into your future plans!  In addition, they will provide a tutorial on how to use the CSCC academic technology systems.

Course Registration
With support from OLs and Academic Advisors, you will learn how to use the online registration site to search for, select, and register for courses. You will also be able to view and print your bill.

How to Support Your Student
Get excited for the second portion of your orientation experience, and begin finding ways to connect with offices on campus and your fellow CSCC parents and families.

Academic Advising Overview
Learn how academic advising works at Columbus State (and what your students will be doing) from an member of the Center for Advising, Support, and Exploration (C.A.S.E) team. Also, get insight from the C.A.S.E. staff on how to best support your students' transition to college.

Student Panel
Current Orientation Leaders (OLs) will provide brief insights to how they have been supported by friends and family in their college experience. You will have an opportunity to ask them questions, too!

Classroom Experience
Experience what it's like to truly be a student at Columbus State Community College.  By learning from individuals who work daily on the campus, you can have a better understanding of your students' experiences and their expectations.

Financial Aid
Learn the basics of Financial Aid at Columbus State from our local experts. This informal presentation will be interactive and allow for you to bring your own questions. Some individual appointments will be available following the presentation.
