A member of one of the first Honors Program cohorts at Columbus State, Joe’s older brother Jack was a big influence. “He had a great experience in the program and said I should apply for it, too.” Joe was accepted and began his Columbus State experience in autumn of 2015 as an Honors student.

“My favorite part of the program is definitely the friends you make. You have a lot of classes with the other Honors students. We’ve really formed a tight-knit group of friends.” Joe says the Honors Program has changed his college experience. “Going to college is usually an individual activity, but in the Honors Program, you’re part of a group all going through the same thing.”

Although the lure of an Honors Program scholarship originally attracted Joe to the program, he soon discovered many other benefits. “It’s opened up experiences I would never have gotten otherwise,” he says, referring to the guest speakers, group trips, service projects and exposure to a wide variety of career possibilities that Honors students get as part of the program.

Joe is attending Columbus State tuition-free, having received scholarships through the Honors Program and the Future Scientists of Ohio program. He aspires to be a physical therapist, and plans to transfer to Ohio University after earning his Associate of Science at Columbus State.
