2017 Columbus State Writers Conference
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, May 6, 2017
Columbus State Workforce Development Center
Thank you for your interest in presenting at the 14th Annual Columbus State Writers Conference.
We plan to offer a broad range of presentations and are seeking proposals on all writing-related matters. Presentations should be an hour long and feature an interactive exercise of some kind for participants. For example, a presenter could discuss for 30-40 minutes the fundamentals of a particular topic and then use the remaining time to lead participants in an exercise to apply the techniques. Last year’s presentations included topics on crafting short forms in poetry, creating fanfiction, and writing with the power of ritual and metaphor.
We discourage presentations that are only lecture or question-and-answer based.
You may submit up to two proposals, but each must be on a different topic and submitted
as a separate document.
To submit a presentation proposal, please follow these guidelines:
- E-mail proposals as attachments in Microsoft Word (2003, 2007, or 2010) or rich text (RTF) format.
- Be detailed, but limit proposals to 250 words.
- Include the presentation title and a description of the presentation and exercise.
- Include a jpg. photo of the presenter.
- Include a brief bio of the presenter, highlighting awards, education, and/or publication history.
- List any additional equipment or accommodations you might request and why (e.g., a table to display related computer software).
- Provide contact information, including full name, e-mail address, mailing address, and phone number.
Please e-mail your proposals to Mike Wright, Conference Co-Chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Proposals must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 to be considered.
For examples of past presentations, visit last year’s Writers Conference web site at http://www.cscc.edu/writersconference.
The conference will be held at Columbus State’s Workforce Development Center, in conference rooms that are PC (Microsoft Office) and Internet equipped. Each room has an LCD projector and screen. We can also provide markers, whiteboards, and large paper tablets on easels.
There will be a book fair, where presenters may display their works for sale. A continental breakfast is provided for participants and presenters.
Parking is free and convenient to the center.
Selection Criteria and Process
The Writers Conference committee will review all proposals submitted. Among the criteria for selection will be professionalism of the proposal, credentials of the presenter, and suitability of the topic to the conference’s theme, budget, and diversity. The committee will also look for proposals that suggest a fun, timely, and creative presentation.
The committee will review proposals and make its decision in mid March.
Notification by e-mail will follow soon after, along with invitations and details on honoraria for selected proposals. Please note that you will be required to sign a contract and provide a photo in JPEG format along with employment eligibility verification should you accept the invitation.
Thank you, and good luck!
