Health & Safety Training

Safety Training at Columbus State 2016
In compliance with the Public Employee Risk Reduction Act (Ohio Department of Commerce) and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), Columbus State provides the required training to all new employees during New Hire Orientation. Columbus State also provides the required health and safety training necessary for specific positions.  Training provides the essential general safety guidelines, regulations, practices and principles to promote a safe work environment. 

Safety Training for CSCC employees is available online through Blackboard.  (The Blackboard URL is http://courses.cscc.edu and the modules are available in the Health & Safety Training 2016 organization.)  Each module consists of a narrated presentation, additional resource materials (including contacts for further information) and an assessment.  Employees must achieve a minimum of 70% on the assessment to successfully complete the training.  Online modules currently available include:

  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Hazard Communications I
  • Hazard Communications II/GHS
  • Lock Out/Tag Out
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Hearing Conservation
  • Electrical Safety

In-person safety training is available as needed for the following topics:

  • Forklift Training & Certification (Contact Tim Butcher (tbutcher@cscc.edu), CSCC Safety Coordinator to discuss employee training needs in your department.)
  • Aerial Lift Training (Contact Tim Butcher (tbutcher@cscc.edu), CSCC Safety Coordinator to discuss employee training needs in your department.)
  • HeartSaver CPR certification course
  • CPR for Healthcare Providers Recertification course

ALL EMPLOYEES are required to complete Fire Extinguisher and Emergency Preparedness training modules.  Fire Extinguisher, Bloodborne Pathogens, Personal Protective Equipment and Hearing Conservation must be completed ANNUALLY by employees in positions exposed to these issues.

INITIAL (ONE-TIME) training in Hazard Communications, Hazard Communications II/GHS, Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space Entry and Electrical Safety is required for all employees exposed to these issues.

Training should be completed by December 31, 2016Completion of training is tracked by the CSCC Office of Human Resources. Call 287-2408 for information.

Hearing Conservation Program

CSCC employees working in positions exposed to high noise levels will participate in the Hearing Conservation Program to monitor effects of exposure. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and training will be provided to the employee at no cost. All applicable employees should complete the Hearing Conservation training module in Blackboard annually and have a baseline audiometric test within 1 month of employment start date.  After a baseline has been established, affected employees should have audiometric testing done annually. Tests will be provided at no cost to the employee and is conducted through OhioHealth at their WorkHealth Centers.
