CRAFT Certificate in Student Mental Health

Are you wondering what is behind student behavior and academic performance? Are you wondering if a student is experiencing a mental health issue? Are wondering how you can support and refer students to professional resources?  This series will equip you with the knowledge and skills to respond appropriately to students' mental health concerns.

College Student Mental Health: "Let's Make a Connection"

This course aims to help faculty and staff understand the impact of mental health problems on academic success in college and risk factors for mental health problems, with an emphasis on community colleges. This course will help faculty and staff develop rapport building skills for communicating with students who may have a mental health/substance use disorder. In addition, this course seeks to help faculty and staff understand stigma around mental health, and how they can reduce stigma in the classroom.

Identifying and Understanding Mental Health Disorders

This course seeks to help faculty and staff learn about risk factors, warning signs, and how to appropriately intervene and provide support to students experiencing a mental health crisis. This course will also provide guidance on how to respond to students in crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis is resolved.

Dealing with Difficult Students

This workshop will focus on both prevention and interventions for behavioral challenges within the classroom.  As the saying goes, prevention is the best medicine, and there are some tried and true methods for minimizing the likelihood that disruptions will happen in class.  But sometimes tough situations arise even with the best preventative measures in place, so it’s important to know what to do when those situations occur.  Join us for a discussion and then an interactive workshop on how to handle some of the most frequently encountered behavioral difficulties.

Behavior Intervention and Threat Assessment Team (BIT/TAT) Online Course in Blackboard

The Columbus State Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is a committee dedicated to educating the college community about proper responses to any behavioral issues—from concerning behavior to a potential emergency. This online training will help faculty and staff learn how to respond to behavioral concerns in a timely manner and take the proper steps to make referrals and provide documentation.

You can access the 35-minute “BIT 101” training video in Blackboard under “My Organizations.” There is a brief quiz at the end which allows you to earn a certificate for your professional development portfolio and qualifies the inclusion of this class in the CRAFT certificate sequences.

QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training

Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR) is a proven suicide prevention gatekeeper course that reduces suicidal behaviors and saves lives by providing innovative and practical skills to trainees.  Three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.  At this training, you will learn how to (1) recognize someone at risk for suicide, (2) demonstrate increased knowledge of intervention skills, and (3) describe knowledge of referral sources and how to refer someone on to receiving help.  We will also share Myths and Facts about Suicide, Tips for Asking the Suicide Question, the QPR Approach, the Wall of Resistance, and the importance of a Detection Network.
