After a week of consistent play, the Columbus State men’s golf team finished as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Runner-Up, Friday, at the Chautauqua Golf Club in New York. The tournament winner was Georgia Military College, of Milledgeville, Ga.

This marks the first national runner-up finish for the Cougars which includes a history of two national championships (1993 and 2003) and numerous national tournament appearances.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College, College of DuPage, Ill., and Nassau Community College, N.Y. finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Two Columbus State golfers were named All-Americans at the conclusion of play. Freshman John Carlisle led the Cougars with a 78-73-72-73—296, eight over par, for First-Team status, while sophomore Dominic Caminiti shot 79-76-77-78—310, 22 over par, to receive Third-Team All-American recognition.

Other scorers include sophomore Philip Campisi, who tied for 21st place with a 78-82-78-79—317; freshman Christopher Dearth who placed 23rd with a 78-79-81-80—318; and freshman John Mikulec who carded an 82-80-84-81—327.

"It was a great tournament on a beautiful course and I'm proud of how they handled the entire week.  I saw a lot of leadership and we have a great group of young men who conducted themselves commendably," said head coach Rocky Nelson.

The Afterschool Alliance recently presented Columbus State Community College’s ESL Afterschool Communities (ESLAsC) program with the 2017 Dollar General Afterschool Literacy Award.

The program helps immigrant and refugee children in Franklin County develop academic, social and personal skills in a safe, caring environment. The Dollar General award recognized the program’s demonstrated excellence in helping develop English language learners’ literacy skills at its Southpark and Prairie Norton sites specifically.

Florence Plagenz, Supervisor of ESL Afterschool Communities accepted the award, including the $10,000 prize, on behalf of the program. “We’re very proud of the work we’re doing with Columbus’ immigrant and refugee community—assisting to further develop their English skills and supporting them as new Americans,” she said. “This award will help us to continue that work, and I hope it will help bring some attention to the particular needs of the children and families we serve. I’m very grateful to Dollar General and the Afterschool Alliance for this generous affirmation of our work.” Read the full press release.
