October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Do you know the warning signs of domestic violence, or where you or a loved one can go for support? In the U.S., an average of 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute. Domestic violence spans communities and identities and impacts us all.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Look for upcoming events this month to find out ways to be involved in spreading awareness and stopping the violence.

If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic violence, Columbus State offers victim advocacy for all students, staff, and faculty. Advocates can be reached at ext. 5979 or at victimadvocacy@cscc.edu.

Student delegates sought for summit

logo

The Office of Student Life is seeking employees’ help in identifying five students to represent Columbus State at a November 5 statewide summit called “Changing Campus Culture Student Summit: Generation IX.”

Hosted by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the summit is an excellent opportunity to network with students and professionals from other Ohio schools, get ideas on how to change the culture at Columbus State, and be a part of the solution. The students will be helping to shape an empowering campus climate free of all violence.

If you know of a student who might need an extra nudge to apply to be a member of this important delegation, please provide their information in this nomination form. If they are selected, all expenses are paid. If you would like to send the application link directly to a student, it can be found at The Hub.  For more information, contact Jessica Boor.

Sternberg joins Cultural Arts Center Board

Ruth Sternberg, Grants coordinator, has joined the board of the Friends of the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. The Center, 139 W. Main Street, offers classes for adults in every area of visual art. It is partially subsidized by the City of Columbus as part of the parks and recreation program. However, a large portion of its operating budget is dependent upon voluntary contributions.

New credentialing required for international students

Beginning February 1, 2017, Columbus State will require applicants who have completed high school outside of the U. S. to use a credential evaluation agency to obtain documentation of equivalency to U.S. high school completion. This evaluation must be obtained from agencies holding current memberships with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. The International Student Service website has more information: Foreign High School Credential Submission or email iss@cscc.edu.

The Library is pleased to welcome artist Wilfredo Calvo-Bono to the library as a returning artist of the month.  The exhibit “Possibilities 2016” is dedicated to students.  To students, Calvo- Bono says, “Your success will be determined by knowledge and imagination.  You will be surrounded by possibilities at all times.” Possibilities 2016 is located on the second floor, and includes several pieces done with diverse materials including canvas, wood, metal, magnets, and textiles.

This exhibit is in two parts. The second exhibit, “Hispanidad,” is located on the first floor, and includes the works of three Hispanic artists from Spain along with Calvo-Bono’s personal collection from Mexico. This exhibit is on view through the end of October. Please stop by the library to view this exhibit.
