Lifelong Learning Institute

• What is the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI)?

  • The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) of CSCC provides educational opportunities for mature learners in central Ohio to broaden and extend their knowledge, share their life experiences, become more attuned to community resources, and interact with other "lifelong learners." Peer-led and membership-driven, LLI programs focus on educational opportunities, social connections and personal growth.

• How is the LLI connected to Columbus State Community College?

  • The LLI is a special program established within the Continuing Professional Education Department in the Division of Community Education and Workforce Development. The Institute will strive to meet the non-credit learning needs of Franklin County's 183,000 citizens age 55+. Since the mission of community colleges is to serve the public interest, it is not surprising that five other community colleges in Ohio sponsor LLI's on their campuses and in outreach centers

• How is the Institute governed?

  • A volunteer advisory Steering Committee of retirees works with Columbus State staff to develop guidelines on Policies & Procedures, Curriculum, Membership, Scholarships and Publicity/Promotional Materials.

• How is the Institute funded?

  • While the LLI is expected to be self-sustaining from membership fees, additional funds will be sought from grants.

• What kinds of courses are offered?

  • Courses are offered in a wide range of areas, including the arts, science, current events, history, language, technology, spirituality, economics, and world affairs.

• Who chooses the curriculum?

  • A Curriculum Subcommittee of the volunteer Steering Committee works closely with Columbus State staff to develop the curriculum and identify instructors. Suggestions are always welcome.

• How do LLI courses differ from other educational opportunities available to older adults?

  • LLI courses are offered year-round, during the day, at easily accessible locations with free parking. They involve college-level learning, but unlike college courses lasting a quarter or a semester, LLI courses will be shorter-usually 3-4 sessions of 2 hours each. Since these courses are non-credit, they will be free of tests and assignments, although reading will be encouraged.

• Who is invited to conduct classes?

  • Qualified members of the Institute will be invited to teach courses in addition to faculty and staff of public and private higher education institutions, community leaders, and regionally known experts in their fields.

• Why offer only non-credit courses?

  • Credited courses must meet higher education state and accrediting agency standards, including assessment for knowledge retention, grading, length of courses, and contact hours. Such guidelines do not apply to non-credit courses, providing a better educational fit for retirees interested in learning for self-fulfillment or personal interest in a topic.

• Where are classes held? How frequently and for what duration?

  • Classes and events will be held in various parts of Franklin County at Columbus State 's off-campus centers, senior residence facilities, Dominican Sister's Martin de Porres Center, etc. Locations will be easily accessible with free and handicapped parking. Three to four-week courses and individual special events will be held throughout the year according to a published schedule.

• Is there parking?

  • Yes. Locations are easily accessible with free and handicapped parking. Additionally, reserved parking for on-campus events and courses is provided on a first come, first served basis. Reserved parking is conveniently located near the building wherein LLI conducts its programming. Free parking passes are provided to all members and non-members which permit parking in the LLI reserved parking and any CSCC student or employee parking lot.

• What is the cost?

  • The annual membership fee is $100 per individual and $160 per couple/partners. The annual fee will cover the cost of courses and events taking place between September 1 and August 31 of the following year. Prorated memberships are available (See Prorated Memberships). Individuals may also opt to not join and pay on a per-course/event basis.

• Other than the annual fee, are there other charges?

  • The only other charges beyond the annual membership fee will be for materials needed for specific courses. These costs will be listed in the published schedule of courses.

• Are there provisions for financial hardship memberships?
