Sophie Metaferia
Student Ambassador receives full scholarship to Texas A&M

Sophie Metaferia, Phi Theta Kappa member, former Student Ambassador, All-Ohio Academic First Team Winner, and one of the Women Students of the Year in 2005, began the second part of her educational journey August 25, leaving for Dallas where she will accept the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship at Texas A & M University. The scholarship will cover all her tuition and fees while she finishes her Bachelor's Degree. Metaferia's goal has always been to earn her M.D. so that she can return to her home country of Ethiopia and work as a doctor. Isabel Ruenger, a 2003 All-Ohio Academic Team winner from Columbus State, also attends Texas A & M on full scholarship, where she is studying pre-med as well. The Phi Theta Kappa student honor society held its annual induction ceremony August 28, welcoming 72 new Columbus State students into the membership.

Columbus State employees (from left) Betty Richardson, Jeanne Croker ,Nick Tice, student Duane Brouwer, Lori Beckman, and Sue McLaren raised more than $900 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, after being "arrested" by the organization and posting whatever bail they were able to solicit from friends and associates. Jerry Lewis is the celebrity spokesperson for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

 

 

 

 

Walking for heart health
Two teams of employees participated in heart walks Saturday, August 27 - the African-American Male Heart Walk started at the East Opportunity Center and went five miles, and the American Heart Association Walk started in Wolfe Park and went three miles. Organizer Barbara Smith-Allen went to both of them, so her heart is now very healthy!
