New “brand” launched at First Wednesday
The campus community was the first to see Columbus State’s new brand campaign, complete with the first new logo for the college since 1987, when we re-chartered from Columbus Technical Institute (CTI) to Columbus State Community College!
Ad agency Ologie briefed those in attendance about the year-long process to update and refresh the college’s image in the community to the bolder, smarter, and more proactive institution that we have become.
Part of the brand update includes a new logo that will stand the test of time—our original Columbus State logo was designed by Nancy Cleland, advertising coordinator in Marketing & Communications—27 years ago!
In those days without computers, Cleland worked with art boards, sheets of type fonts, wax adhesives, and drawing tools to produce a logo that the Public Relations Department and then-president Harold M. Nestor agreed upon. The familiar CS logo was born, and Dr. Nestor proudly held it up on a piece of cardboard at the re-chartering ceremony on July 1, 1987. Little did we know that the electronic age was upon us, and soon every desk would have a computer, every computer would be connected to the Internet, every pocket would hold a smart phone, and every student would be connected to their college, friends and family through social media—spreading that logo far and worldwide!
The new brand rollout will kick off with an advertising campaign themed “Beyond Measure,” which emphasizes that the benefits Columbus State provides to it students are things that cannot be measured, such as confidence, pride, support, flexibility, and encouragement. The 30-second commercial that was previewed at First Wednesday will begin on TV during the March Madness basketball tournaments. Lots of current students are included, along with four faculty members: Dr. Jeff Bates, Dr. Heather Johnston, Crystal Clark, and Dr. Adam Keller.
At the close of the presentation, Interim VP for Marketing & Communications Nancy Case invited participants to become the first wave of brand ambassadors by ordering business cards with the new logo. The new cards are available to all full-time employees, and can be ordered by going to the Marketing & Communications website, clicking on “Resources” and selecting “Business Card Order Form.” Employees will fill out and print the form for their supervisor’s approval. Supervisors will then turn the forms over to the person in their department who is authorized to order business supplies from OfficeMax. The cards will be ordered through OfficeMax during the period between March 10 and March 31. Everyone will receive an order of 250 new business cards to kick off the new Columbus State brand!
Case went on to explain how the new logo will be phased in over time and as budget allows, to include signage, parking stickers, ID cards, stationery, publications, web pages, and all the numerous items that feature the college’s logo mark. As items and materials are used up, they will be replaced and reordered with the new look, to be fiscally responsible. The Columbus State Bookstore will soon stock small items and apparel with the logo, for those who cannot wait to wear something brand-new and chic!

Note: At First Wednesday and two subsequent briefings, a flash drive was given out as a promotional item. In some cases, the drives will indicate “not initialized” upon first inserting into your computer. You can format your flash drive by right clicking on the “external drive” and selecting “format.” Then give your flash drive a name, and hit “start.” This will format your drive for you.
Latin American Film Series offered in conjunction with Ohio State
Columbus State students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the Spring 2014 Latin American Film Series, co-sponsored by the Spanish program at Columbus State, and the Center for Latin American Cultural Studies at OSU. This is third third semester presenting the Film Series at Columbus State with the mission to provide students access to high-quality movies from all around Latin America. Faculty members who wish to use the Series as a complement to their classes can contact Dr. G. Raquel Pina for more information. The Series is free and open to the public. The theme of the Series is "Social Conflict in Globalized Argentina,” with the film “Paco, The Tip of the Iceberg,” being shown today, at 3:30 p.m. in Franklin Hall 110. On Thursday, March 20, the film “Next Door Man” will be shown at the same time (3:30 p.m.) also in FR110.
Regina Harper, Financial Aid advisor, served on a phone bank during Channel 6 News’ “Monday Money” segment this past Monday. Financial aid experts from local colleges answered hundreds of calls to help students and parents sort through the confusion that may happen when applying for financial aid for college. Phone lines were open from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. during the news hours at WSYX.
On Saturday, March 1, a cheerleading demonstration was in progress when suddenly, the entire squad became a decade younger! The tiny tots continued to cheer loudly as they passed through the time warp and were transformed into their former selves, moments later! This unbelievable event took place during the break between the Cougar women’s win (84-46)and men’s win ( 84-78) over Cuyahoga Community College! (In reality, the two groups of cheerleaders were performing after a Columbus State Cheerleading Clinic put on by Head Cheer Coach Tina Osborne!)
