Columbus State birthday party sweet celebration
Columbus State celebrated the anniversary of its first day of classes on Monday, September 30—the first day that the Columbus Area Technician School opened for business in the basement of Central High School in 1963.
Students and employees were invited outside onto the courtyard to enjoy music, a talent show, a flash mob dance, a huge birthday cake, a cupcake-baking competition, and lots of free anniversary giveaways. President Harrison and Chancellor John Carey were the guest speakers, and students participated in a trivia contest, donated to a food drive, and signed a “Completion Commitment” banner promising to finish their college degree. Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL) dropped off more than 300 pounds of donated food items to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank after the celebration.

Not only did the campus celebrate Columbus State’s 50th anniversary on September 30, so did the Columbus City Council. The full council unanimously passed a resolution that both recognized the occasion and celebrated the college’s academic programs, community partnerships and economic impacts on central Ohio.
The resolution was introduced by Councilwoman—and former Columbus State student—Priscilla Tyson. Coincidently, the resolution was passed around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 30. That’s about the same time evening classes would have been meeting on the very first day of classes on September 30, 1963!
Candidate 1: Carol Thomas

Carol Thomas currently serves as Columbus State’s interim Chief Information Officer. She served in a similar capacity at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Mass., and has provided assessment, planning, and other consulting services for many other community colleges as General Manager with CampusWorks Inc.
Prior to focusing her professional efforts in the community college arena she served as Vice President of Information Technology at New England College in Henniker, N.H., Director of Information Systems in Admissions and Financial Aid at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and Development Manager at the SICAS Center in the State University of New York in Oneonta, N.Y. She has expertise in enterprise resource planning systems, including Colleague and Banner, and the associated business process and organizational focus necessary for success.
She is committed to the use of technology to support an institution’s mission and vision through good planning and stewardship of resources. With more than twenty years of experience teaching with and about technology in traditional, fully online, and hybrid formats at the graduate and undergraduate levels; managing and improving complex systems implementations; and providing leadership, planning, and budgetary oversight to a diverse set of institutions Thomas has achieved a reputation as a thoughtful manager, innovative leader, and committed educator. She is a published author and regular presenter on a wide array of technology topics. She holds a Master of Arts in Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis from New School University in New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from State University College at Oneonta.
Candidate 2: Rick Mickool

Chief Information Officer
For over 20 years in various roles, including CIO and CTO at Babson College, Northeastern University, and Wittenberg University, Rick has provided IT vision and leadership that has supported institutional change and success. Rick has presented at numerous national and regional conferences on the topics of distributed learning, on-demand and cloud service delivery, and re-engineering in higher education. In 2013, Rick was awarded a CC-NIE networking infrastructure planning grant by the national science foundation to build a science DMZ at Wittenberg University.
Rick enjoys teaching both on-ground and online courses and has been an adjunct lecturer at Bristol Community College, Newbury College, Babson College, Northeastern University and Wittenberg University. He holds a BS from Babson College and an MBA from Northeastern University.
Candidate 3: Brian Rellinger
Open Forum is scheduled for Tuesday, 10/15 @ 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.in the WD Ballroom.
Brian A. Rellinger is a chief information officer with more than 16 years of experience in higher education. He has a balance of people and technical skills, a strong focus on customer support, and is able to work in team environments to provide the best possible experience for students, faculty, and staff. His background includes working in a large, public state institution as well as a small, private liberal arts university, and is a proponent of statewide collaboration to reduce IT expenditures.
He believes that communication and collaboration are key components of a successful IT department, as they enable relationship building across academic and administrative units. His experience includes classroom design, mobile technologies, ERP system implementation, and strategic planning.
Brian obtained his B.S.B.A. and M.B.A. at Bowling Green State University, and is currently working on his dissertation to complete the requirements of Doctor of Education. He lives just south of Delaware, Ohio, with his wife and two children, and enjoys running.

Mental Health Fair is October 9
Counseling Services and the Wellness Initiative will offer the inaugural Mental Health Fair, open to the Columbus State community, on Wednesday, October 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Nestor Hall Student Lounges. Areas of interest will include mental health, drug and alcohol, stress and anxiety, coping skills, support groups, community referrals, and meditation and relaxation techniques.
Throughout the month of October, Columbus State’s Disabilities Services Department will offer a number of special events and resources for students, faculty and staff. You can also follow Disability Services on Facebook for inspirational quotes from people with disabilities, and to find links to resources, and important information about the disability community.
Disability Services and Advising Services will collaborate during the month, with advisors located in Disability Services to help registered DS students with registration for Spring Semester.
Posters around campus will feature famous people who have disabilities,
their inspiring stories and quotes. The National Anthem will be signed in American Sign Language at all home volleyball games by students in the Interpreting Department.
Throughout the month, faculty and staff can learn more about Read Write and Gold software for students with reading and writing difficulties, learning disabilities, and for those with English as their second language. The schedule of information sessions is on the Disabilities Services website.
A “Recognizing and Supporting College Students with Autism” workshop will explore Autism and higher education and practical guidelines for teaching and working with students who are autistic. It will use feedback from participants, student work samples and case studies to discover what is most helpful when working with students on the Autism spectrum in the higher education classroom. For the second time, President David Harrison will help determine how state funding for capital construction projects should be divvied up between campuses in Ohio. He joins six other college and university presidents who will collaborate on spending requests for the 37 public institutions of higher learning in the state.
While a total amount of funding for the next two-year capital projects bill has not been announced, it’s expected to at least match the $400 million spending plan that was available for 2012.
Last year, Ohio State President Gordon Gee headed up the collaborative effort between the institutions. It was the first time a governor had college presidents decide collectively which campus building projects should be funded. Previously, each would submit a wish list.
With Dr. Gee now retired, Ohio University President Roderick McDavis and Southern State Community College President Kevin Boys will co-chair the committee.

full year in the making, the college’s second Systems Portfolio is nearing the November 1 finish line. The 125-page report, a component of the AQIP accreditation pathway, updates college operations and improvements by answering 137 questions.
Staff and faculty from every corner of the college submitted research for the nine AQIP categories: Helping Students Learn, Accomplishing Other Distinctive Objectives, Understanding Students and Other Stakeholders Needs, Valuing People, Leading and Communicating, Supporting Institutional Operations, Measuring Effectiveness, Planning Continuous Improvement, and Building Collaborative Relationships.

Banks recognized by PTK, Trustees
At the last Board of Trustees meeting, Tywan Banks was given the Phi Theta Kappa Center for Excellence award for 10 years of service as an advisor of the Alpha Rho Epsilon Chapter at Columbus State.
Banks, who is a faculty member in the Multi-Competency Health Department, earned his associate degree in Medical Laboratory and his master’s degree from Ohio University. He has worked with Phi Theta Kappa since 2003.
In honor of the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance this past month, Columbus State and AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches joined the Columbus Division of Fire at the 3rd Annual Firefighters 4 Kids Classic Car and Motorcycle Show.
The event was held at the Columbus Division of Fire Training Complex and proceeds benefited the Firefighters 4 Kids Christmas Toy Drive. More than 120 classic cars and motorcycles were on display, and the beautiful weather encouraged a greater turn out than past years. More than 15 volunteers worked alongside firefighting cadets, firefighters and their friends and family, to contribute to the event’s success. The College Completion Coaches are funded by a grant received from the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC). The retention and completion program is made up of Americorps volunteers who serve as student advocates and provide success coaching under the supervision of Dr. Jan Rogers, student services advisor and COLS instructor, and Marisa Vernon, assistant director of Advising Services.
Housed in Advising Services, AQ 116, coaches are linked to several sections of COLS 1100 and 1101, referred to as the “embedded model” of coaching. As part of the Americorps service philosophy, coaches Layla Arnold and Kimberly Randall are also committed to encouraging COLS students’ participation in service projects as a way to engage them and foster their academic success.

The Library is pleased to endorse “Banned Books Week,” an awareness campaign sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and other organizations. It was founded in 1982 and, according to ALA, its primary emphasis is on "the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them." During the month of October, Media Services will host the annual A/V interactive museum and display in the Media Studio on the ground floor. This year's display will include vintage and modern video game systems that students can learn about and play. There will be display pieces, ready-to-play game vintage game consoles, a video on the history of video games, and a PowerPoint presentation. The exhibit will be open during studio hours, which are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Mon. through Fri.
