Happy Birthday Columbus State!

logoA lot has happened in 50 years, and we’d like to take some time to celebrate with our history makers—students, faculty, and staff. But it’s not all about the past. Let’s celebrate how we ALL make history every day!

Join us today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the courtyard for an afternoon of music, contests and fun. The party will also be going on at the Delaware Campus in Moeller Hall!

Columbus State Day Book Drive reminder

booksDon’t forget to donate a book or two to the Columbus State Day Book Drive!  As part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration, the English Department is coordinating a Free Book Room on Columbus State Day, Saturday, October 12.  Those attending the “Learning Free-for-All” will be invited to stop in and select a book to take home. All employees have been sent a bookmark to enclose in their donated book, telling the recipient why this book was one of their favorites.  Please donate today!  Book collection boxes have been placed in offices and lounges across campus.

If you have questions, or need additional bookmarks, they are available at the front desk in the President’s Office, or you may contact Nick Lakostik, at ext. 5784.

Columbus State Day of Service a rousing success!

The first-ever Columbus State Day of Service was a huge success, with more than 650 volunteers working in our community at churches, non-profit organizations, schools, parks, food pantries, community centers and more on September 26. Some great highlights of the day can be seen in the video produced by Mark Van Horn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm7J-hRvR6Q&hd=1

Columbus State student photographers and videographers were following the action all day, and in the next issue of Update, we’ll publish a photo gallery by our student photo/video bloggers, where you can see where even more of your friends and coworkers spent their day last Thursday!

Doing service learning in class?

Do you incorporate service-learning in your teaching?  If so, you may apply for an “S-designation” for your Autumn 2014 classes.

According to the organization Learn and Serve, service-learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning process, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

New, beginning Autumn Semester 2014, Columbus State sections of existing courses that meet the criteria for service learning may be offered in the course listing with an “S” suffix.  The S-designation makes it easier for students to locate service-learning classes and provides standards for class design across the college.

All S-designation requests will be handled through the Office of Academic Affairs Service-Learning Committee.  For guidance on this process, please contact the committee co-chairs Lisa Briggs and Nancy Pine.

To submit your S-Designation application for approval, please email the committee chairs or servicelearning@cscc.edu to receive a proposal form. The deadline to submit proposals for Autumn Semester 2014 classes is November 1, 2013.

This year Columbus State will again sponsor the Regional First Lego League Robotics Contest on Saturday December 7, in the Columbus State Conference Center.  This year’s challenge is called “Nature’s Fury.”  Many volunteers are needed for this fun event, so please save the date to volunteer!  If you are interested in being a part of the fun, please contact volunteer coordinator Gene Sprang.

Caregivers Employee Resource Group is Friday, October 4

The challenges of caring for others can result in caregivers ignoring their own physical and emotional health.  Share your story and network with other employees who also provide care to children, elderly family members or dependent adults.  Join the group on Friday, October 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in WD1094 (near the elevators) for the Caregivers ERG.  Contact Lori Thomas, Caregivers ERG Liaison, for more information.

Distinguished Teachers to present Oct. 8

What makes a teacher great? What successful teaching practices work across disciplines? How can we help our time-crunched students be successful?

These are some of the questions we can explore together with the recent Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) winners. Join this year’s DTA winners Fauna Stout, Beth Barnett, Eric Kenz, and Rick Bartlett for an afternoon of conversation about outstanding teaching.  The event is open to all employees and will take place on Tuesday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m. in CT 107. A live stream (URL announced later) will also be available to view at other locations.  Pre-registration is encouraged.  For more information contact Rich James, at ext. 2175.
