A seasoned fundraising professional has arrived at Columbus State to oversee the Columbus State Foundation. Pam Bishop began her role February 18 as the Foundation’s new Executive Director.

Advisor led team through S2S
Sue Judd
When many other members of the Switch to Semesters Core Team had “hit the wall,” Sue Judd was willing to stay engaged, thoughtful and focused to work through the issues, according to co-workers in Advising Services, where Judd works as an advisor.
Her work on the complex testing and trouble shooting of Datatel systems during the semester conversion earned her the first Part-Time Employee of the Month Award, given Feb. 26 by Dr. Harrison in a surprise ceremony in the Advising Center.
Co-worker Beth Stanley wrote, “Sue has an incredibly positive attitude and even with the increased workload, you never heard her complaining. She sees her project through to the end and doesn’t take credit for her work, but rather joins in the celebration of the entire team’s work.”
“She helped train employees college-wide on countless topics pertaining to S2S. She has been instrumental in conducting DARS Blue Print Workshops to help students understand the switch. She helped get the tracking system and data collection system in place for the new Career Services Office. She did all this while still managing to see students for advising appointments in her ‘spare time,’” said Stanley.
Supervisor Dawn Blair agrees stating, “Sue is the go-to person on our staff. She is a patient advisor who has a great rapport with our students. Add to that her amazing technical expertise and you have an individual who contributes in a significant way, every day.”
Reminder: Next meeting of “First Wednesdays” to be held March 5
The next meeting of “First Wednesdays” will actually be on a Tuesday next week! The monthly town hall meeting and Staff Employee of the Month presentation with President Harrison will be held on Tuesday, March 5 at 8:15 a.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom (WD fourth floor). All employees are invited to attend.
Countdown to Health Rewards points is on
The countdown is on to achieve your United Health Care (UHC) health and wellness points. Employees receiving health coverage through UHC are required to earn a minimum of eight points between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. That gives everyone four months to achieve those final points.
They can be earned in a variety of ways including having a biometric screening during an annual physical, visiting the dentist and doing an online health assessment on the UCH website. More information about how to earn extra points will be coming your way in the next few weeks in Update. Employees who fail to earn the required points will see their annual portion of health care costs rise to 30 percent from the current 20 percent.
For those on the family plan, only the employee of Columbus State is currently required to achieve the health and wellness points. Spouses and dependents do not to need to take part this year.

First in performance series at The Lincoln Theatre is next week!
Columbus State’s music and theater programs will perform various works in a special series at The Lincoln Theatre, starting Tuesday, March 5 with the Columbus State Concert Band, under the direction of Thomas Lloyd and the Columbus State Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Rick Brunetto!
The concert will be from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. March 5 in The Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St.
Florence Beatrice Price, (1887-1953) was an African American composer, arranger, organist and teacher.
The band will offer a special concert made up of the work of woman composers, in honor of Women’s History Month in March. The concert will begin with one of the "Three Negro Dances" (1939) by Florence Price, the first African American woman to compose a symphony. "Ticklin' Toes" shows the influence of ragtime. It is Price's only work for band.
"Maiden Voyage" (2010) is the first published work for band by Minnesota composer Shirley Mier. Guest Artist Dr. Nicole Charles will perform French composer Cecile Chaminade's “Concertino for Flute” (1902). This is one of the most famous compositions for flute and has been a standard in the repertoire for more than 100 years. Dr. Charles teaches at the University of Dayton.
"Alegre" (2002) is a Latin American-styled piece by Afro-Cuban-American composer Tania Leon. The title means "joyful" in Spanish and the piece features many percussion instruments and is highly rhythmic. Nancy Seward's "A Celtic Ballad" (1999) has a beautiful melody that weaves through the band giving the audience the spirit of Ireland.
The band will conclude the first half of the concert with "West Wind Overture" (2012) by Julie Giroux. Columbus State helped to create this work by joining with fifteen other schools to commission the new work under the auspices of the College Band Directors National Association.

Monday, March 25, Chorus Columbus State, under the direction of Gordon Franklin, will present a concert featuring spirituals and jazz songs, also from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. at the Lincoln.
In April, award-winning director Frank Barnhart will take Theatre Columbus State to the Lincoln to perform Six Degrees of Separation, an examination of the threads of chance that link one person to another. The play will run Wednesday through Saturday, April 24 – 27, from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. A special matinee will be performed on Thursday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.
The Series will wrap up on Monday, April 29 with Emma Easton’s Gospel Vocal Ensemble performing a Historic Flashback of Great Gospel Choirs, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.
All concerts and plays are free and open to the public.

Being Cultural Beings: An Experiential Workshop offered March 27
Through a rich cultural simulation activity facilitated by Tasha Lebow and Robin Brenneman from the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), this workshop will closely examine issues of social interaction, diversity and communication. The workshop will be held Wednesday, March 27 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Center for Workforce Development.
Participants will take a brief ‘journey’ in an elaborate cross-cultural simulation activity. The examination of group membership, culture and communication occurs through a surprisingly meaningful structured activity. The follow-up discussion will crystallize the experience and connect it to our lives, schools and work places. Information on using the activity for students and staff training will also be shared.
