Quality Awards announced
Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2012 Continuous Quality Improvement Awards, including Distinguished Teaching Awards, Distinguished Full Professor Awards, Staff Employee of the Year, and the Quality Team Awards.

The awards were given at a luncheon held August 1 in the Conference Center Ballroom and attended by all the finalists in each category. This year’s awards luncheon was the first occasion that all awards were announced together. Formerly, the teaching and staff awards were given at the Spring In-Service program.
Employee of the Year Joel Mathias
First were the annual Distinguished Teaching Awards, given to faculty who have been nominated by their students and selected by a panel of their peers. The winners are: Reuel Barksdale, associate professor in Business Management; Jennifer Dragoo, instructor in Developmental Education; Christine Evenson, professor in the Interpreter Education Program; and Merideth Sellars, instructor in Biological Sciences.
The Staff Employee of the Year is selected from the finalists for Staff Employee of the Month over the past year. This year’s winner is Joel Mathias, who is a systems administrator in Information Technology.
The ceremony then geared up to present the second annual Distinguished Full Professor Awards, which recognize tenured full professors for their leadership, community service, and teaching innovations. The 2012 winners are Robert Fitrakis, Ph.D., J.D., professor of Social Sciences; Thomas Habegger, Ph.D., professor of Sport and Exercise Studies; Gerald Mueller, professor of Mathematics; and James Taylor, CEC, professor of Hospitality Management.
The final awards given were the Quality Team Awards, which recognize continuous improvement projects done by teams of three or more individuals working in collaboration across department or division boundaries. Two Silver Awards were given; the first to The Colleague Training Team, made up of team leader Barbara Allen and members Lori Thomas, Jason LaMar, Tisha McGlaughlin, Elizabeth Wyles-Smith, Debbie Sears, Susan Van Atta, Debbie Strain, John Donahue, Jaimie Allen and Tori Sims.

The second Silver Award went to The Cougar Challenge 5K Team with team leader Susan Thomas and members Brent Ernsberger, Sherita Golden, Ruventia Hill, Rich James, Linda Kauffman, Darla Van Horn, Mark Van Horn and Arlene Wilson.

The Gold Team Award went to The Biggest Learner Team, including team leader Mary Ernsberger and members Will Kopp, David Wayne, Tony Goins, Mark Van Horn, Laura Shady, Sharmaine Pechac, Todd Taylor, Carolyn Kaufman and Reuel Barksdale.

Congratulations once again to all the winners of this year’s Continuous Quality Improvement Awards!
The Columbus State Foundation has received a $35,000 grant from Cardinal Health to support the Formula Technician certificate program that is offered by the Community Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) Division. This customized training program is for technicians who are responsible for mixing patient formulas supplying the calorie intake for infants as well as older adults. The result is increased nutrition to patients and fewer formula preparation errors. Cardinal Health has supported this program with a grant every year since 2010.
Everyone has strengths. Recognizing and tapping into them to reach larger goals can lead to increased job satisfaction, performance, productivity and success.

"Three Wise Men", by Vivian Pittman
The Library is pleased to announce the opening of its August joint art exhibition featuring works by artists Suzanne Gallagher, Vivian Pittman and Barbara Thomas.
Suzanne Gallagher writes, “The natural beauty of Florida from my childhood is contrasted in my memory with the loud artificial colors of the tourist trade, the tourists themselves, and sun bleached hues in between. College brought me to Ohio and dramatic changes in season. I became enamored with blue shadowed snow. It was also a change from youth to adult; innocence to responsibility; ignorance to empathy.”
Vivian Pittman, an Ohio Arts Council award winner writes, “Being an artist sometimes can be difficult. I have put so much energy into this project, (“Three Wise Men” – a work in the exhibition) that time seems to stand still.”
Barbara Thomas, also an Ohio Arts Council award winner and an artist whose work has been exhibited in the Columbus Museum of Art writes, “I started making mud dolls when I was a little girl. I have been sewing since I was a child and I love beautiful things all around me in nature and in people. I love to look at art around me every day.”
The exhibition will be on display in the Library throughout the month of August.
A crew from NBC Nightly News tapes correspondent Peter Alexander interviewing students Biran Jones and Noelle Bauman August 8. Alexander interviewed several students and Dean of Enrollment Services Marty Maliwesky during the visit. The news crew, including two producers, a videographer and a sound technician, was in town to file a report for an upcoming three-part series on election issues. The series will involve three swing states. Higher education and student debt are part of the national conversation during the current presidential election.
ESL Afterschool program gets grant to continue work
The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded a grant of $143,500 to the Columbus State ESL Afterschool program at Wedgewood Apartments. The program serves more than 40 Somali youths and their families, providing them with academic and cultural integration support.
Starting Autumn Semester, the maximum financial aid credit available for the purchase of textbooks and course materials at the Columbus State Bookstore will increase to $650. Full-Time, One-Time Compensation Sheets are due to be submitted to the Human Resources Department by close of business on Friday, August 10. One-time compensation for full-time employees will be on the August 31 pay and employees receiving bonuses will see that on the September 15 pay. The Columbus State Parking Garage will have several levels and entrances closed this week end next for cleaning and painting. Closings are:
August 9 – 3rd and 4th floors closed.
August 10 – 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors and south entrance closed.
August 11-12 – Over the weekend, the entire garage will be closed to parking.
SPAM emails to be handled by new vendor
Columbus State Information Technology is changing vendors for the filtering of SPAM email. The new SPAM filtering service will dump items detected to be SPAM into your GroupWise "Junk Mail" folder. This means you will no longer need to log in to a web portal to view your SPAM report. Currently the GroupWise "Junk Mail" folder automatically empties into the "Trash" folder every 7 days. The "Trash" folder then empties every 7 days. So with the current default settings you have 14 days to review your SPAM email before it is deleted from your email account. However, if you wish to modify that interval, the 7-day "Junk Mail" setting may be configured to extend the junk mail retention period or shorten it as you desire using the <Tools> then <Junk Mail Handling> features in GroupWise.
Established email white-lists will be moved to the new service. Email that contains known viruses will be blocked. If you receive email in your INBOX that you know to be SPAM simply right click that email and choose <Forward as Attachment>; send it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
This new service will go online August 22. Your last SPAM report will be on August 22 containing items filtered on August 21.
