Evaluating transcripts (and more) brings student commendation
As Transcript Evaluator in Records and Registration, Summre Jones might not be the obvious go-to person for confused, first-time Columbus State students. But her willingness to help out a baffled new transfer student earned her a nomination for Staff Employee of the Month. She received the award for the month of May in a ceremony held May 2, attended by her coworkers and supervisors.
Jones “took time out to show me where to find information on the website, how to get into a class already filled, what courses transferred and even helped me get my books,” says student Charmain Fields. “Because I’ve never attended CSCC, I needed a lot of help! Summre was patient, helpful and timely with the information, even though it was not in her job description,” says Fields. “I can always email her my questions and get a rapid response on where to go or who to talk to. By assisting me and educating me, Summre helped me be able to assist other students. And if I don’t know the answer, I always refer them to Summre!”
There’s still time to nominate your team project or a faculty member who has achieved the rank of professor, for one of the Continuous Quality Improvement Awards that will be presented at the annual luncheon this year on August 1.
The Quality Team Awards are given to the members of a project team who have completed a process improvement during the past year and can show their results. Members of the first-place team divide a $4,000 award, and members of two second-place teams will earn $2,000 awards.
The Distinguished Full Professor Award, new last year, seeks nominations from the campus community of faculty members who have achieved the rank of full professor, and “who have continued to perform in an exemplary manner through service, scholarship, innovation, leadership and other professorial achievements.” Cash awards are also given to the winners of this award. These nominations require only the name of the professor being nominated and should be sent to Carmelita Boyer in Human Resources via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Human Resources Department has added two additional Open Enrollment meetings for the fulltime-benefit-eligible employees who were not able to attend one of the previous sessions. The meetings will be held on Monday, May 7, at 9:00 a.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. in WD Room 409.
The Open Enrollment period is for medical, dental, vision, life and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) for the year starting July 1, 2012. The Open Enrollment period ends on May 18, and all changes to your benefit elections must be received in HR by 4:30 p.m. Any changes made during the Open Enrollment period will be effective on July 1, 2012.
What is open enrollment?
Open enrollment refers to the period of time during which eligible fulltime employees have the opportunity to enroll in certain benefit programs. Open enrollment is generally only held once a year. If you miss your annual open enrollment, you likely will not be able to enroll in the employer-sponsored health plan until next year. Certain exceptions apply for new employees or employees with qualifying life-changing events.

The inaugural Cougar Challenge helped Staff Advisory Council raise $3,500 for book scholarships, 75 percent of which will go to the Mike Stancil book scholarship for employees. The remainder will be used to start a new book scholarship for students. A great turnout of nearly 200 runners and walkers helped make the first annual Cougar Challenge a great success! Libby Daugherty, Ph.D., director of Assessment for Student Learning, and Antoinette Perkins, Ph.D., associate professor in Sport Exercise Studies, presented "So You Want To Build an Assessment FOR Learning Toolbox" to a packed room of more than 300 people at the Higher Learning Commission Annual meeting April 2.
Columbus State's Assessment FOR Student Learning Website and Handbook impressed the participants, according to Perkins. “The educators took a treasure chest of learning tools back to their campuses,” she said.
“After the presentation, Libby and I were rushed by the participants, with accolades for the tools presented,” said Perkins. “One gentleman said, ‘I can go home now; I got my gold nugget; this was the best presentation at the conference!’”
Daugherty presents nationally at conferences such as the League for Innovation in the Community College, Assessment Institute, Alverno College, and Association for American Colleges and Universities. Daugherty said it was "extra special to have Antoinette debut as a presenter at this level. She really enjoyed it!”
On March 15, the Board of Trustees approved year two of the Voluntary Cash Separation Incentive. Eligibility for voluntary separation is based on retirement eligibility in accordance with Ohio public retirement systems STRS, SERS, or ARP:
Thirty years of public service at any age
Twenty-five years of public service with a minimum age of 55
Five years of public service with a minimum age of 60

Prior to the recently completed renovation of the Library, a monthly tradition was to exhibit the art works of local artists throughout the building. As a renewal of that tradition, the Library is proud to announce the opening of two new art exhibitions by local artists. Displayed on the Library’s first floor are works by artist William Hemming. On the second floor, the works of Marvin Taylor are displayed along the walls of the eastside open gallery space. The Library is proud to partner with local artists to provide a venue for their works where they can be viewed by a larger audience.
The Office of Financial Aid will be changing the way students are notified about additional information needed once their 2012-2013 FAFSA forms have been received. They will now receive the initial notification to their Columbus State student email account. Previously this notification was mailed to students’ homes. Now, the links for required forms will be provided in the email message for easy access. Students will be able to print all documents, complete them with required information and signatures, and submit them to the Financial Aid Office.
The priority deadline date for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for Autumn Semester is June 1, 2012. The FAFSA must be completed each year. Students have been reminded that if they plan to attend Autumn Semester, they should be sure to check their student email daily for updates and other important information about their upcoming enrollment and financial aid status. Students who do not have a computer are able to access the information using a computer in the Student Assistance Center in Madison Hall or any computer lab with internet access.
Financial Aid will begin the process of notifying students by email about their 2012-2013 FAFSA on approximately June 1, after the deadline to file for Autumn Semester.

Thursday, May 31 is the final day of Bike Month. At 6:00 p.m. in CT 107, members of the college and Columbus communities will work within the creative constraints of 20 PowerPoint slides lasting 15 seconds each to share a compelling message. Do you have a story or idea to share?
Topics may include your unique take on bikes in history and culture, your vision for a bike-able community, a positive effect of cycling or just a darn good bike story! Topics already planned include “Can Bicycling Make You Smarter," "Bike Propaganda," and "The Fascinating History of the Bicycle."
