Arts & Sciences Lecture SeriesDr. Philip Zimbardo to speak October 24

Philip G. Zimbardo, an internationally recognized scholar, educator, researcher and media personality will be on campus Wednesday, October 24, at 3 p.m. to discuss his latest book, “The Lucifer Effect.” The lecture is free and open to the public. The lecture, presented by the Arts and Sciences Division and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, falls on In-Service Day, but all staff, faculty and students are welcome to attend the lecture at 3 p.m. The lecture is sponsored by Pearson/AB Longman Publishing.

“If there has been a more important and compelling book written in the last 25 years, I've not encountered it,” writes Jon D. Hanson, Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, in a review of “The Lucifer Effect.” “Phil Zimbardo's engaging and beautifully written tour de force uncovers the sources of evil—big and small. ‘The Lucifer Effect’ accomplishes more than simply making the darkness visible; it also helps to make lightness possible. It is crucial reading for everyone.”

Dr. Zimbardo has won numerous awards and honors for his work in the field of psychology. He has been a Stanford University professor since 1968 and has taught at Yale University, NYU and Columbia University. Zimbardo's career is noted for his popular PBS-TV series, “Discovering Psychology,” as well as his many text and trade books, which are among his 300 published works. He recently served as president of the American Psychological Association.

Mokie Steiskal

Steiskal named vice president of International CHRIE

Mokie Steiskal, Ph.D., chairperson of Hospitality, Massage Therapy, Sport & Exercise Studies, was installed as vice president of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) at the annual educational conference in Dallas this summer. As 2007-2008 vice president, Steiskal will assume responsibilities as president of the organization in 2008-2009. The I-CHRIE membership includes 1,500 two-year, four-year, and graduate hospitality and tourism educators from around the world.

Financial Aid Non-Attendance Reporting on CougarWeb goes live Oct. 23 Beginning Autumn Quarter 2007 the quarterly process for reporting the Financial Aid Non-Attendance information will be completed through CougarWeb. This enhancement will eliminate the costly printing of paper attendance rosters and streamline the workflow for the Records and Registration Department.

The faculty will now see a new menu item within the Faculty Menu of CougarWeb entitled “Financial Aid Non-Attendance Reporting.” The instructions for completing the Financial Aid Non-Attendance Reporting can be found in the CougarWeb 3.0 for Faculty User Guide under the section titled “Financial Aid Non-Attendance Reporting.”

The window for reporting attendance information for Autumn Quarter 2007 will open on October 23 and close on November 6 at 11 p.m. Faculty with course sections to be reported will receive an email notification prior to the window opening instructing them to complete the information.

A new reporting window has been added near the end of each quarter to allow the collection of attendance data for courses not meeting the timeline of the first reporting window. These sections designated for the second reporting timeframe will include second term courses and additional flex-term courses.

The second window for reporting attendance for Autumn Quarter 2007 will open on November 21 and close on November 27 at 11 p.m. Email notifications will be sent to the faculty prior to the window opening for collection of data. Only faculty with course sections requiring attendance reporting during this second window of collection will receive an email notification.

The Help Desk will be available during their regular hours to assist faculty in completing the Financial Aid Non-Attendance reporting.

In-service session on November 5 for nursing license renewal
Jan Lanier, Director of Health Policy at the Ohio Nurses Association will speak to the 7th-quarter student nurses on Monday, November 5, from 1- 2 p.m. The content in this in-service will meet the mandatory law requirement for nursing license renewal.

SAC sponsors Lunch Money for a Day Oct. 24 picture of lunch bag The Staff Advisory Council will again sponsor the annual “Lunch Money for a Day” campaign benefiting the Children's Hunger Alliance. In 2006, SAC raised over $1,200, and they would like to boost donations to $1,500.

At In-Service Day, October 24, SAC asks each employee to donate $4 at the Lunch Money for a Day box. Checks can be made payable to Children’s Hunger Alliance. You can also drop off your donation to Betty Richardson at the I. T. Support Center (ERC lower level) Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, Oct. 22, 23 or 25, from 8 a.m.–5p.m.

Sing the “Star Spangled Banner”The Department of Athletics is looking for Columbus State students or employees to sing the National Anthem before the basketball home games during the 2007–2008 season. The first home game is Friday, November 2, and games continue through February. Those interested in singing or playing a musical instrument should contact Scott Nichols in the Athletic Department.

Gehr addresses OSCHE representatives

Terri Gehr, senior vice president for Business and Administrative Services, addressed members of the Ohio Staff Council of Higher Education (OSCHE) at their autumn meeting to discuss Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s $122 million partnership between the Ohio Third Frontier Project and the University System of Ohio.

Gehr explained that the partnership creates an unprecedented collaboration between the Ohio Third Frontier Project and higher education. According to Mandy Gollhofer, web developer in Instructional Services and a member of OSCHE, the new partnership, approved by the Ohio Third Frontier Commission, will recruit senior scholar research talent from disciplines directly related to the five technology focus areas defined for the Third Frontier Project: advanced materials; biosciences; information technology; power and propulsion; and instruments, controls, and electronics.

Gollhofer explained that the Ohio Third Frontier Project will provide $72 million for the recruitment program, and the University System of Ohio will fund the remaining $50 million from the Ohio Research Scholars Program that was initiated with the enactment of House Bill 119. This program makes the commission and the University System of Ohio partners in the oversight and approval process for funding recommendations, aligning their shared goals in science and technology.
