Third annual Writer's Conference offers two days of workshops, speakers

The Communication Skills Department will host "Shared Voices: Words in Action" a two-day writer's conference April 29 and 30, featuring 15 workshops plus a keynote address from David Citino, Poet Laureate of The Ohio State University.

Rita Rice and Steve Abbott, Communication Skills, are conference co-chairs for the event, which promises "the opportunity to unite and share in an exciting lineup of talented writers, poets, agents and marketing experts."

Some of the session topics include: fiction writing with Crystal Clark, screenwriting with Kip Knott, poetry with Steve Abbot, playwriting with Nancy Kephart, all faculty in Communication Skills, and writing for the web with Doug Grey, a Technical Communications faculty member.

The conference is open to the public and pre-registration is encouraged. The conference fee is $60, $20 for students, and includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments. The keynote address by David Citino "The Secret Lives of Writers" is at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, and is free and open to the public. TRIO Receives Department of Education Grant

Solidarity, Ohio's oldest and largest conference planned by and for people with disabilities, is expected to draw more than 800 attendees to its 8th biennial event May 11-13 at the Hyatt Regency and Convention Center in Columbus.

Wayne Cocchi, Columbus State's director of Disability Services, will be coordinating an accessible computer lab that will include adaptive software and hardware for the attendees to experience, also allowing them to use the Internet while at the conference.

Two nationally-recognized keynoters will underscore the conference theme of "Civil Rights: Your Rights and Responsibilities" –Michael Winter, director of the Federal Transit Administration's Office of Civil Rights, and Jim Dickson, vice president for governmental affairs for the American Association of People with Disabilities.

The third keynote speaker will be Juliette Rizzo, director of communications and media for the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. She's also the current Miss Wheelchair America.

A conference highlight will be the Statehouse visit by attendees to speak with their local legislators.

Solidarity 2005 will offer 37 educational workshops on current issues impacting Ohioans with disabilities. More than 40 exhibitors will display new assistive technologies or provide educational and employment information. An arts fair, heath fair, computer lab and nightly entertainment are also included.

Aviation Maintenance Department hosts symposium

The Columbus State Aviation Maintenance Department hosted the 14th annual Ohio Aviation Maintenance Symposium March 16-17 at the Bolton Field facility. More than 450 aviation technicians who hold inspection authorizations received their required eight hours of recurrent training for their annual renewal. Participants came from as far away as Hawaii. The 31 speakers included Columbus State Aviation Maintenance Instructor Jeff Gruber, who presented "Human Factors in Aviation." Participants also had the opportunity to visit 41 vendor displays set up in the hangar at the Bolton Field facility.

FAA gives Columbus State highest award
At the 14th annual Ohio Aviation Maintenance Symposium, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) presented the faculty of the Aviation Maintenance Department with the FAA Diamond Award for Excellence in Training. This is the second year that Columbus State has been given the highest award in the FAA Program. Manufacturing Summit and Golf Outing to benefit Engineering Technology Scholarship Fund

On May 3, Business and Industry Training Services will host its first Manufacturing Summit and Golf Outing at Bridgeview Golf Course. Sixty professionals from central Ohio manufacturing firms are expected at the event.

Morning educational sessions include “The State of Manufacturing in Ohio,” presented by the Ohio Manufacturers Association, as well as sessions on “Putting Lean and Six Sigma to Work,” “Issues in A Global Workplace,” and “Improving Your Employees’ Technical Skills.” The morning sessions will be followed by a buffet lunch provided by City Barbeque and a 9-hole golf scramble in the afternoon.

Summit fees are $49 per person or $149 for a foursome with all proceeds benefiting Columbus State’s Engineering Technology Scholarship Fund. More information is available by clicking here.

Early retirement incentive forums scheduled

At its March meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the voluntary early retirement incentive program. Details and logistics of this program will be presented by the Human Resources Department at forums on the following dates:

Monday April 18 11 a.m. – noon NH D
Thursday April 21 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. NH C

In addition to the above forum dates, representatives from both SERS and STRS will conduct breakout sessions on the early retirement incentive program during In-Service Day, May 6.

Animal Use Policy and Procedures town hall meetings scheduled

The Curriculum Committee of Shared Governance has approved the Animal Use Policy and Procedures and is seeking campus input. These policies can be reviewed by clicking here. The campus community is invited to provide input at town meetings:

Copy Center now offering notary services

In addition to postage stamps, shipping services, laminating, and more, the Copy Center, is now offering notary services. Signatures can be notarized and oaths administered from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Copy Center is located in the basement of Delaware Hall.

Travel and reimbursement policy change forums scheduled

Effective April 18, a new travel and reimbursement policy will be implemented. The travel office is hosting several open forums to discuss the changes.
