
Admission
Admission to the Surgical Technology Program is offered for the AUTUMN
QUARTER yearly. Requirements listed below are to be completed prior being
offered a seat into the next available class. Criteria include high school
courses, college placement tests, college courses, and equivalent approved
training. All courses required for admission must have an academic grade of
“C” or better.

Information Sessions are open to all and reservations are not required.
Sessions include: program admission criteria, review of Certificate and
Associate degree Surgical Technology Plan of Study, and preview of
opportunities for career employment as a Surgical Technologist. You will
have the opportunity to meet current program students, graduates, faculty
instructors, and affiliate staff preceptors to gain an overview of the
profession and the program.

I. Admission Criteria:
1. Submission of official high school transcript verifying graduation or
General Education Development (GED) results. (GED) score reports with a
minimum average standard score of 45 and a minimum of 35 in each sub-test.
2. Completion of high school biology within the last five years or BIO
100 Introduction to Biological Sciences or BIO 101 Introduction to
Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent college credit.
3. Completion of CHEM 113 General and Biological Chemistry or
equivalent college credit.
4. College placement testing or course completion of the following:
- Math placement testing into MATH 104 or completion of MATH 103
Beginning Algebra II. Students who have college algebra courses with
a grade of “C” or above are not required to take the algebra skills
placement test.
- Writing placement testing into ENGL 101 Beginning Composition or
ENGL 111 Composition, or completion of ENGL 100. Students who
have transfer credit for ENGL 101 are not required to take the writing
skills placement test.
- Reading placement testing out of the reading requirements or
completion of DEV 044 Critical Thinking and Reading. Students who
have transfer credit for ENGL 101 are not required to take the reading
skills placement test.
5. College course completion, or successful completion of equivalent
approved training.
- NURC 102 Patient Care Skills I or equivalent approved
training. (changed from MULT 126.
* prerequisite NURC 101 Nurse Aide Training Program or equivalent
training (changed from MULT 120).
- HIMT 121 Advanced Medical Terminology or equivalent approved
training.
6. Achievement of a minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4-point scale based
upon completion of courses at the school or college most recently attended
(high school, vocational program, or a two-year or four-year higher
education institution). Students who do not have a minimum 2.50 GPA for
their most recent course work must complete at least 12 credit hours of
college-level course work at Columbus State Community College with a minimum
GPA of 2.50 before they will be considered for admission to the Surgical
Technology Program. All official transcripts must be on file in the records
and registration office by the respective enrollment dates. The minimum 2.50
GPA must be maintained for all courses within the program Plan of Study
through the start of the Surgical Technology Program and throughout the
program.
7. Columbus State Community College makes every effort to inform prospective
students of the admission requirements for the Surgical Technology Program.
Students are, however, responsible for maintaining awareness of the
admission requirements and any changes made to those requirements over time.
