On-Campus Employment

Maintenance of lawful F-1 status
Must not displace a U.S. resident
Maximum Length
Part-time: 20 hrs per week for the
duration of stay at CSCC. Employment terminates upon completion of
study/ graduation/ or transfer to another school. It does not include
employment during the 60-day grace period following completion of study.
Initial entry F1s may begin work 30 days before class start
Full-Time work allowed during annual vacation and quarter breaks
however, CSCC may not allow full-time on-campus employment for F1
students
Advantages
No fee; no permission from
International Student Office; work doesn’t have to relate to field of
study
Disadvantages
Employment terminates if student
violates F1 status.

Must have had a “good faith” effort to find employment on-campus or
through the pilot program
Maximum Length
Granted by USCIS in increments of
one year at a time or until the program end date whichever is shorter.
Authorization ends if a student transfers school.
Full-time work allowed during quarter breaks and annual vacation
Can be approved for full-time employment both on-campus and off-campus.

Must have a written offer of
employment from a qualifying international organization. (See ISS Office

Must continue to maintain a full course of study in F1 status during the
period of employment.

Special Student Relief

Financial support comes from one of the five designated countries:
Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Allowed to register for no less than 6 credit hours per quarter during
the period of employment.

Nine months in lawful F-1 status
Must be either: designed to enhance program and endorsed by academic
department; necessary to complete graduation requirements; or co-op,
internship, or work study program.
Maximum Length
Part-time: Unlimited
Full-time: also unlimited but not able to use optional practical
training if 12 months or longer
Advantages
No fee if endorsed by academic
department, work authorized by a foreign student adviser, not USCIS
Disadvantages
Full-time employment for 12 months
or more disqualifies the student from optional practical training (this
includes training after graduation:

Advantages
More flexible and often easier to
get than curricular practical training
Cumulative maximum of 12 months per educational level. Becomes eligible
for another 12 mos. of OPT when changes to a higher educational level
Disadvantages
Time subtracted from training after
graduation
For example: 3 months of full-time optional practical training during
the summer would leave only 9 months of optional practical training
after graduation
