NATIONAL CHAMPS AGAIN
Sport & Exercise Studies Makes it a Decade!  

Sport & Exercise Studies has been informed by the American Association of Community Colleges that for the tenth year in a row it is the top producer of sport management graduates (Associate degree) in the country!  Congratulations students, alumni, faculty, and associates on another GREAT YEAR!!  

2009 Sport & Exercise Studies Hall Of Fame
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS  

It is never too early to nominate a fellow alum!!  The SES Hall of Fame committee is requesting nominations for the SES Hall of Fame 2009 induction ceremony.  Nomination forms are available by contacting Dr. Tom Habegger thabegge@cscc.edu or 614-287-5422.  Nominees must be a graduate of the SES program and been an alumnus for over five years.  Nominations of “friends” of the program or a professional that has made direct impact on the SES program will also be accepted.  Nominations will be accepted through January 31, 2009.  The inductees will be honored during the SES Hall of Fame Ceremony in the spring of 2009.  Please contact Dr. Habegger with any questions!  thabegge@cscc.edu  

Helfrey-Cecil Announced New SES-HPC Coordinator  
Dr. Mokie Steiskal, Chairperson for the Hospitality, Massage Therapy, Sport & Exercise Studied Department has announced that Mandi Helfrey-Cecil, A.A.S., B.S., ACSM-CPT will be the new Coordinator of the Sport & Exercise Studies Human Performance Center.  Mandi holds an Associate in Sport & Exercise Studies degree from Columbus State, as well as, a Baccalaureate degree in Exercise Science from The Ohio State University.  Welcome Mandi!! 

Kay announced as SES-Teaching Assistant  
Dr. Mokie Steiskal, Chairperson for the Hospitality, Massage Therapy, Sport & Exercise Studied Department has announced that Johnna E. Kay, A.A.S., B.Ed will be the new SES Teaching Assistant.  Johnna holds an Associate degree in Sport & Exercise Studies from Columbus State, as well as, a Baccalaureate degree in Physical & Health Education from Capital University.  Welcome Johnna!!   

Welch Promoted  
The President’s Office has announced that Assistant Professor Eric Welch, M.A. has been promoted to Associate Professor beginning with the autumn term of 2008.  Congratulations Mr. Welch!   

Don Laubenthal Announced as New SES Faculty
Mr. Don Laubenthal, M.S., CSCS has been named as the new SES faculty member replacing the late Dr. Dave Litt.  Don has been the Coordinator of the Sport & Exercise Studies Human Performance Center since 1995, as well as serving as an SES adjunct instructor.  Don will assume his new position on June 30th with the beginning of summer quarter.  Don holds a baccalaureate and masters degree in Exercise Science from Ohio University.  Congratulations Don!!  

Habegger Named 2008 Distinguished Teacher  
Sport & Exercise Studies Professor, Dr. Tom Habegger was named one of the 2008 Distinguished Teachers at Columbus State for 2008.  The Columbus State Distinguished Teaching Award is Columbus State’s highest faculty honor.  Tom was named during the 2008 Columbus State In-Service Day and Employee Recognition day in April.  Congratulations Tom!  

2008 Sport & Exercise Studies Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony a Success  
The 2008 SES Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Thursday evening, June 5, 2008 in Delaware Hall Room 121.  This year’s SES Alumni Hall of Fame inductees Mary Bass (2001), Kornell Battle (1994), Johnna Kay (2002) were all able to attend the induction ceremony.  In addition, Mandi Helfrey-Cecil was announced as the SES-Human Performance Center Associate of the Year, Amber Barnstable was announced as the SES Adjunct Instructor of the Year, and the SES-Students of the Year were also announced, the list included; Margaret Powers, Aaron Petrosino, Ross Boyles, Bree Brown, Brian Matthews, Eric Peters, Andrea Klabbatz and David Stevens.  A small reception will followed the ceremony in the HPC courtesy of the hospitality Management program.  A special thank you to Chef Taylor and Chef Kimmler.   

SES-ALUMNI GOLF OUTING
Raises Funds  

The 2008 Sport & Exercise Studies Alumni Golf Outing raised about $500.00 benefiting the SES Scholarship program which was held at noon on Friday, June 6th at Bridgeview Golf Club (Columbus State’s Golf Course).  Thank you to all who participated!

Loss of a Champion
Dr. David W. Litt (1956-2007)
 
It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Dr. Dave Litt.  Dave passed away after a brief illness on December 16th.  Dr. Litt served Columbus State for over 15 years.  First, as the athletic trainer in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and then as a faculty member in the Sport & Exercise Studies program where he served as Program Coordinator for five years.  His loss is a crushing blow to all students, alumni and SES faculty and associates.  There was a Memorial Celebration in honor Dr. Litt on Saturday, January 19th.  A scholarship has been established through the Columbus State Foundation in Dave’s name.  The scholarship will be named the Dr. Dave Litt Memorial Scholarship for Exercise Science Students.  Donations are now being accepted.  Contact Dr. Tom Habegger for more information.  thabegge@cscc.edu  

SES faculty and students form SES Sport & Social Club 
Adjunct Instructor Mr. Chris Hill and Assistant Professor Eric Welch are heading up the newly formed SES Sport & Social Club.  The club’s mission is to offer SES students, alumni, and faculty an opportunity to socialize and professionally network.  Autumn quarter 2008 activities will be announced soon!    Autumn 2008 Registration   Course registration for autumn term 2008 begins on July 28th.  Currently enrolled and continuing students are encouraged to register early.  Strong enrollment combined with the new student registration processes for the college may cause delays, so see your assigned sport management advisor to pre-register.  Students can inform themselves as to the new registration system by logging in to cscc.edu for more information   ADVISORY COMMITTEE Meeting Announced   The Sport & Exercise Studies Advisory Committee will meet on Thursday November 13th, 2008.   SUMMER ‘08 Commencement Set for September 12th   Summer commencement is set for September 12th at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium.  The ceremony will begin at 10am.  Approximately 15 Sport & Exercise Studies graduates are expected to participate.   Summer Quarter 2008 Human Performance Center Hours {614} 287-3843 – Delaware Hall 032   Monday – 8:00am to 8:00pm Tuesday – 8:00am to 8:00pm Wednesday – 8:00am to 8:00pm Thursday – 8:00am to 8:00pm Friday - 8:00am to 4:00pm   Alumni Updates   We have lost track of many SFM/SES alumni.  Please forward new addresses, employment updates, or life celebrations to Johnna Kay, Sport & Exercise Studies Teaching Assistant at jkay@cscc.edu
