He came to the Sport & Exercise Studies program that year after serving in the Student Activities and Athletics Department for ten years. Welch arrived at Columbus State in the spring of 1990 when he was hired as the Coordinator of Recreational Activities and served in that capacity for three years.

In the summer of 1993, he was promoted to the position of Supervisor of Student Activities. Prior to his full-time employment at Columbus State, Welch served a graduate assistantship here at the CSCC while completing his master’s degree at The Ohio State University. During that time, he helped coordinate recreational and intramural programs and started the school’s first baseball program in the spring of 1988. After graduating from OSU, Eric served as an assistant baseball coach at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1989 and 1990.

Outside of Columbus State, Eric has been involved in numerous activities. From 1991 to 1993, he served as the Director of Public Relations for the Ohio Community College Athletic Association. The Huntington, West Virginia native also served as that organization’s Commissioner from 1997 to 1999 and was voted the OCCAC’s “Athletic Director of the Year” for 1999.

In 1993, Welch began a seven-year stint coaching and managing in the independent Frontier Professional Baseball League. During the 1993 and 1994 seasons, he was a coach with the Zanesville Greys and was then named manager of the club before the start of the 1995 season. He served in that capacity for two seasons until the organization left Zanesville after the 1996 season. From there, Eric was hired as a coach with the Chillicothe Paints and worked with that organization from 1997 to 1999. From 2001 through 2003, Welch served as an assistant baseball coach at Westland High School before becoming the head baseball at Columbus State for one season – 2004.

At Huntington East High School (WV), Welch was a member of the three-time state championship baseball team (1980, 81, 82) and also played on the school’s basketball team. From 1984 to 1987, he was a varsity letter-winner with the Marshall University baseball team.
