Admission
- This admissions process applies to the class beginning 2007 Summer
Quarter. Admissions information for the Summer Quarter 2008 will be
available and posted no later than Oct. 1, 2007.
- Program Admissions is limited due to the availability of clinical
teaching placements.
- The Radiography program begins every Summer Quarter and is 7
quarters in length.
- A selective admissions process is applied when candidates meeting
admission criteria exceed program capacity.
Step 1: Apply to Columbus State Community College
- Before you can apply to the Radiography program, you must first
submit an application to Columbus State Community College. After a
College application has been submitted, prospective students will be
notified by the College Admissions Office. NOTE: Application to the
College is not the same as application to the Radiography program. After
you have been accepted to the College, you may then apply to the
Radiography program.
- High school (or equivalent) and any college transcripts must be
submitted to the Records and Registration Office, 210 Madison Hall, 550
East Spring Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. NOTE: Courses completed at
Columbus State are already on file and do not need to be submitted.
- For some students, prerequisite coursework may be needed prior to
enrollment in certain courses and programs. It is the responsibility of
the student to be aware of prerequisite courses. Please consult the
College Catalog or a Health, Human, & Public Service Advisor if you have
any questions regarding prerequisite courses. Their website is

Step 2: Take the College Placement Test (COMPASS)
This process assists students in identifying the appropriate starting level
for reading, writing and math courses.
- Math Skills: Placement into MATH135 or MATH148 OR completion of MATH
103 or 104. Students who receive transfer credit for MATH 103 or higher
are not required to take the Math Skills portion of the placement test.
- Reading Skills: Placement out of reading course requirements OR
completion of DEV 044. Even if a student has transfer credit for ENGL101
or ENGL111, they must still take the reading placement test unless they
already have an Associate's or Bachelor’s degree.
- Writing Skills: Placement into ENGL101 or ENGL111, OR completion of
ENGL100. Students who are awarded transfer credit for ENGL101 or ENGL111
are not required to take the Writing Skills portion of the placement
test.

Step 3: Attend a Radiography Program information session
Information session dates are available here or by calling (614)287-5215. Information sessions
are held Summer, Autumn, and Winter quarters at various dates and times. No
appointment is necessary.

- Friday, November 7, 10am-noon, Nestor Hall 012
- Wednesday, November 19, 2-4pm, Nestor Hall 212
- Wednesday, December 3, 2-4pm, Nestor Hall 212
Room locations will be announced soon.
Note: Information sessions are the only place to get an
application to the Radiography Program.
Program Information Sessions review the following information:
- Overview the Imaging professions, specifically radiography, nuclear
medicine, and radiation therapy.
- Discuss specific aspects and career opportunities in the radiography
profession.
- Review the Radiography program Plan-of-Study curriculum.
- Review the College and Radiography program admissions process and
application.
- Identify additional resources at Columbus State that may assist in
the student preparation.
- Update applicants of any program changes for the upcoming admissions
deadline.
Health, Human and Public Service advisors are another excellent resource.
Appointments are necessary.
Step 4: Apply to the Radiography Program
- The application deadline for the next class beginning Summer Quarter
is April 1st.
- Applications are only available at the Radiography Information
Sessions.
- Only current completed applications submitted by the application
deadline will be considered.
- Applicants will be notified of their status in the program by mail
approximately 8 weeks after the application deadline.
- The program utilizes a selective admissions process whereby the most
qualified applicants are considered at the time of application.
- The Nurse Entrance Test (NET) test is an important addition to the
Radiography Admissions Process. Schedule early for the NET test. There
are a limited number of scheduling appointments.
Applicants for admission to the program will be evaluated based on
completion of admission requirements, NET results, and overall GPA. Students
who have completed additional math/science courses, obtained other allied
health or other advanced degrees may receive additional consideration. A
Radiography program Admissions Committee will make the final determination
of acceptance into the program. The program utilizes a selective admissions
process whereby the most qualified applicants are considered at the time of
application.
All application materials MUST be included in the white Columbus
State envelope you were provided with at the information session. Student is
responsible for postage. You must initial and sign the Radiography Program
Application Packet Checklist indicating that ALL application items have been
included in your application packet. The Radiography program Admissions
Committee will not consider an application packet that is incomplete.
The following steps apply when applying to the Radiography program:
- Complete all sections of the program application (green form).
Applications are ONLY available at the Radiography Program Information
Sessions.
- Submit transcripts for high school and college coursework to BOTH
the Radiography Admissions Committee (with your application packet) and
Columbus State’s Records Office. Only coursework completed with a ‘C’ or
better will be considered. This includes general (G) and basic related
(B) courses listed on the Radiography program Plan-of-Study and
completed prior to the application deadline.
- High School Chemistry (or equivalent must be taken within the past 3
years of the application deadline) and High School Physics and Biology
(or equivalent must be taken within the past 5 years of the application
deadline) OR completion of CHEM100, PHYS100 and BIO100 (or higher).
- Documentation of observation of a minimum of 16 hours in a radiology
imaging department. The program observation forms (3 parts) can be
obtained by attending a Radiography program information session.
Additional health care experience (employment, health care credentials,
etc.) may also be considered. Note: Please see 2007 Radiography
Observation Criteria for information on how to complete your observation
hours.
- Submit a written statement of interest and intent. This should be a
1 page, typed paper in your own words indicating your interest in the
radiography profession.
- Submit Compass Placement Test results (if applicable.
- Completion of the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) is required for
admission to the Radiography Program. You will have one attempt per
application year to complete the NET. The NET is a computerized, timed
exam which evaluates academic and social skills in seven areas:
essential math skills, social interaction profile, stress level profile,
learning style, reading comprehension for science textbooks, reading
rate, and test-taking skills. Applicants are strongly encouraged to
review the NET study guide in preparation for taking the NET. The study
guide is available at most public libraries, or for purchase in the
Bookstore.
Note: To register to take the NET, contact the ACT Learning and
Testing Center (614) 287-5750. The NET will cost $25.00 payable at the
Cashier’s Office in Rhodes Hall. On the day of the test, bring a picture
ID and your paid receipt with you to the ACT Center, Union Hall, Room
035 (ground floor). You must inform the ACT Learning and Testing Center
that you are a Radiography applicant. The staff in the ACT Learning and
Testing Center will NOT advise you or discuss your results with you. The
results of your NET will be mailed to you and you MUST provide the
Radiography program with a copy of the results as part of the
application packet ***The Testing Center has a limited number of
testing appointments. Schedule early!***
- Achievement of a minimum of an overall GPA of 2.75 (on a 4 point
scale) based on completed courses at Columbus State, other recent
college transcripts, or high school transcripts. The GPA will be
considered from high school/college transcripts. Only the GPA’s from
college transcripts will be considered if a minimum of 24 credits have
been completed at the college level at the college most recently
attended.
- Applicants are responsible for completion of all pre-requisite
courses that pertain to the general (G) and basic related (B) courses on
the program Plan-of-Study. Please consult the College Catalog.
- Attention International Students: International high school and
college transcripts must be evaluated by Education Credential
Evaluators, Inc. (www.ece.org) or World Education Services (www.wes.org).
The transcript evaluation must include a “Course-by-Course” evaluation.
Transcripts should be submitted by November 30th to ensure transcript
evaluations are available by the application deadline. The agency should
send one copy to Columbus State’s Records Office and one copy to you so
you can include your copy in your application packet to the Radiography
Program Admissions Committee.
Additional Program Information
Technical Standards have been established to assist students in
assessing the physical nature of the technical courses. Examples
include: (to be used as a guideline only)
- Reach 6 feet off the floor.
- Communicate in a clear and concise manner.
- Read and apply appropriate instructions in charts, records,
requisitions, and computer applications.
- Lift a minimum of thirty pounds up and over the level of your head.
- Move immobile patients from carts and E.M.S. style guerney/stretchers
onto x-rays tables with assistance.
- Must be able to utilize wheel chairs for patient transportation.
- Consistently understand and apply clinical instructions given by
Radiology Department personnel.
- Utilize computer keyboard for interaction with Radiology Information
Systems.
- Visually monitor patients in dim light. Visually monitor patients via
video screens during routine
fluoroscopic/surgical imaging from a 14 inch screen at a distance of up
to 15 feet.
- Visually able to apply information from radiographic images specific to
resolution, contrast, and anatomy.
- Able to detect audio alarms on patient monitoring equipment and
devices. Hear various equipment and
background sounds during routine radiographic procedures. Correctly
respond to directions of health personnel in a surgical setting.
Statement regarding Infectious Diseases. Students in any of the
Allied Health programs, including the Radiography Program, perform their
clinical work on real people. Columbus State does not discriminate
against students, faculty, or patients in any way, or based on color,
creed, national origin, gender, disability or sexual preference. The
patient populations with whom we work come from all walks of life, and
the students may therefore be exposed to many types of communicable
diseases. These are not limited to but may include: Hepatitis (A, B, C,
or D), HIV/AIDS, TB, measles, mumps, rubella, rubeola, etc.
All students
are required to have appropriate immunizations after they are admitted
to the program, but no later than July 15, 2007.
Additionally, although
all precautions are taken to minimize exposure and risk, there is always
a slight possibility that precautions may fail or that a student may
accidentally expose him/herself. All students entering the Radiography
Program must be aware of this slight, but real, potential. All students
are recommended to have personal health insurance in effect by the first
day of class.
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Individuals who have
been convicted of, or plead guilty to, or plead ‘nolo contendre’ to a
crime may not be eligible to take the ARRT Radiography Examination
according to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist’s Code of
Ethics, Section B.3. Rules of Ethics. For additional information,
