Columbus State Community College – Law Day 2005

The Event

The theme for Law Day 2005, held May 2, 2005, was "To Win Equality by Law:  People v. Price."   Eco-terrorism is suspected when a fire destroys much of a ski resort that was planning to expand into neighboring wilderness areas.  An outspoken opponent of the expansion is arrested and charged with arson.  Will she be convicted?

At the conclusion of the trial Columbus State President Valerie Moler introduced the keynote speaker, The Honorable Harland Hale, Franklin County Municipal Court Environmental Judge.  Judge Hale shared his stellar career leading up to his current position.  He encouraged the paralegal students in their endeavor to becoming paralegals and the middle school students to work hard and continue their education.

The Judge

The Honorable Jan Michael Long, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Pickaway County, Ohio Juvenile/Probate Division, once again presided over the proceedings.  Judge Long's dedication and service has been a key factor in the success of Law Day.

The Cast

SPA members filled the roles of Prosecutor, Defense Attorney, Paralegals, Police Officers, Defendant, and Witnesses.

Students visiting from area middle also acted as jurors and the the court gallery.

Law Day History

In 1958, Charles S. Rhyne established the first Law Day to honor the rule of law, showing respect for that which is the key to individual freedom and justice.

President Eisenhower was the first president to issue a Law Day Proclamation, which has since been issued by every President.  Law Day is a day where all those involved in the law come together and celebrate our great heritage of liberty, justice and equality under law.
