     Magazines, journals, and newspapers are located on level 2 of Columbus Hall.  We have over 500 titles, including 10 different newspapers, covering a variety of topics.  Older issues of magazines and newspapers on kept on microfilm and microfiche. We have 4 microfilm reader/printers, and 2 microfiche reader/printers.  From the reader/printers you may read magazine articles or print the articles for 10 cents per page.

1. How do I find magazines/journals/newspapers in the library?

All periodicals - magazines, journals, and newspapers are located on level 2 of the library. They are in alphabetical order by title on the shelves. Lists of the magazines and newspapers the library owns are available at the Periodicals, Reference, and Circulation desks and online:

You can also search the library's online catalog, CSLINK, for a particular title. OhioLINK's E-Journal Finder is also available to determine which databases contain citations and full-text for particular periodicals.

2. Where can I check out magazines/newspapers?

Magazines, journals, and newspapers are for use in the library only and cannot be checked out. There are copy machines on all three floors of the library for your use. Copies cost 10 cents per page.

3. Why wouldn't a particular magazine/newspaper issues be on the shelf?

  1. The issue may not have been received yet (check the online catalog).

  2. Someone may be looking at the issue you are searching for.

  3. Check the carts in the building, the issue may be waiting to be reshelved.

  4. Despite security precautions some issues get stolen.

4. What if the magazine/newspaper issue is older than the ones on the shelf?

The library has back issues of many magazines, journals, and newspapers on microfilm or microfiche. The microfilm and microfiche is located on the top floor. The readers/printers will allow you to make copies of articles from the microfilm or microfiche for 10 cents per page. Also, see the next question.

5. What if I found a great article from my computer search and you do not carry the  
    magazine/journal?

Check OhioLINK's E-Journal finder first to determine if the periodical is available full-text in a database. If the periodical is not available full-text in a database, reference librarians can help with the fax request service from the periodicals department. Sometimes we can request that articles not otherwise available can be faxed to us from another OhioLINK institution. There are limitations. There are forms for requesting this service at the Periodicals, Reference, or Circulation desks.

6. How much would a fax request cost me?

Fax request are free, but may take up to 2 weeks to be filled. Plan ahead and get your request in early.

7. What are the fax limitations?

  • There is no guarantee that we can obtain the article you requested.

  • It can take up to 2 weeks for a fax request to be filled.

  • Each person is allowed up to 5 requests per week.

  • Our library does not share article-sharing agreements with public libraries or most 4-year colleges (such as OSU).

  • If we cannot obtain the article for you we will try to let you know if it is available at another Columbus area library.

8. Can you fax personal items for people?

We cannot send or receive any personal faxes. The fax machine is for library business use only. The Copy Center, next to the Bookstore, will fax items for students for a small fee.
