- The Health & Medical
Resources Guide is
intended to provide our students, faulty and staff with a basic
pathfinder for select health and medical resources available on the
Internet.
- OhioLINK Resources are
subscription databases. They can be accessed off-campus by using your
Cougar ID number for authorization. OhioLINK resources can also
be accessed at campus computer terminals without the need for OhioLINK
authorization.
- OhioLINK Authentication:
The OhioLINK off-campus authentication web page is located at
https://authdb.ohiolink.edu/WAYF/.
Follow the on-screen instructions. Once you have authenticated with
OhioLINK, you will be taken to a list of databases you can use.
- Required Software: To
load or print some files from off campus, make sure you have
software that reads PDF format such as
Adobe
Acrobat Reader. Download for free at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
- Navigating and Searching the
Health & Medical Resources Guide: Use the browser's
word search feature to search for the Medical Resources Guide. Find
it from the browser's top menu. Open EDIT and choose FIND.

Biological Abstracts “Biological
Abstracts, a leading source of life science information,
collects abstracts and
bibliographic references to worldwide biological and medical
literature.
Biological Abstracts contains
references to journal items focusing on vital biological and
medical
research findings, pharmacological
studies, and discoveries of new organisms.”
CINAHL - Nursing and Allied Health
Coverage
includes: Nursing - coverage of virtually
every nursing journal published;
Allied Health - physical therapy, occupational therapy,
emergency services;
Specialized Health - consumer health, alternative therapies,
health
sciences librarianship.
MEDLINE “MEDLINE
is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic
database
covering the fields of medicine,
nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system,
and the pre-clinical
sciences."
LexisNexis Provides
full text articles from general news sources (newspapers) as
well as a limited selection of
medical newsletters and journals.
Academic Search
Complete “Academic
Search Premier is the world’s largest scholarly,
multi-discipline, full text
database designed specifically for academic institutions.” Many
medical
and health related journals and
many full text articles.
PsycINFO “PsycINFO
contains citations and summaries of journal articles, book
chapters,
books, dissertations, and technical
reports, all in the field of psychology and the psychological
aspects of related disciplines,
such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education,
pharmacology, physiology,
linguistics, anthropology, business, and law."

The official website of the non-profit
Cleveland Clinic. Information about treatment options, research,
and specialty considerations. Also provides virtual access to
medical professionals.
MayoClinic.com
Information
on conditions, drugs, disease management, lifestyle planners,
etc., presented by the well known
Mayo Clinic.
MedBioWorld “The
largest site for medical & bioscience journals, associations, &
databases.”
This is a Web portal or directory.
Does not provide content, but rather links to other sites that do.
Still an impressive collection of
links.
MedicineNet.com
Commercial
Web site with information on diseases and conditions,
procedures and tests, medications,
healthy living, and more. More
than a few advertisements,
but a good site, established and
maintained by physicians.
MedlinePlus ”Health
care information from the world’s largest medical library, the
National
Library of Medicine at the National
Institutes of Health…information about specific diseases and
conditions and also has links to
consumer health information from the National Institutes of
Health, dictionaries, lists of
hospitals and physicians, …”
Netwellness A
site with a local flavor. A
non-profit consumer health web site that provides high
quality information created and
evaluated by medical and health professional faculty at the
University of Cincinnati, Case
Western Reserve University, and the Ohio State University.
Alternative
Medical Foundation –
Website providing information
“about alternative
systems of healthcare, treatment
and diagnostics.” Two of
their Website features:

HerbMed
– “HerbMed® - an interactive,
electronic herbal database – provides hyper-linked access
to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health.”

Resources
– The Alternative Medical
Foundation’s directory on alternative medical treatments and
practices such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, mind body medicine,
etc. Includes information on books, journals, associations and links
to other Web sites.

Electronic Journal Center (EJC): Full Text Online Periodicals -
Medical/Health Title List The EJC
features scholarly journals written primarily for the
professional and graduate level audience, but many articles of use to
the undergraduate student.
New England Journal of Medicine
You
can search the journal back to 1975.
Only
abstracts are provided for articles
from 1975 – 1992. Abstracts
and full text of articles are
available from 1993 through current
issue.
This journal is also indexed with abstracts in CINAHL, Medline
and Academic Search Complete. It is available in print
at CSCC ERC.
JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association
The journal’s Web site offers
a complete table of contents of
each issue, plus, many of the standard monthly features are in
full text. The major articles are
available through their Web site only to those with personal
subscriptions. JAMA is indexed with
abstracts in CINAHL and MEDLINE. It is available in
print at CSCC ERC.
