Dietetic Technician Major Description

The Dietetic Technician major prepares the student for employment as a dietetic technician for membership in the American Dietetic Association, and for eligibility to take the national registration examination to be credentialed as a Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR). The program consists of seven quarters (2 years) of full-time study, which leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Hospitality Management with a Dietetic Technician major. The program provides quality-learning experiences to enhance initial employment opportunities and to improve technical and supervisory skills for career advancement in food service and nutrition care.

After successfully completing the course of study, the graduate is qualified to work in healthcare facilities under the guidance of a registered dietitian.

Major responsibilities may be assigned in the area of foodservice management, teaching food and nutrition principles, or nutrition care. The dietetic technician is expected to be able to assume a leadership role in a nutrition services department or related program.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, 312/899-5400, a specialized body recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. In addition it is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Hospitality Management Programs (CAHM).

 

Admission: To apply for admission, a prospective student must complete a Columbus State Community College Application form or apply on-line at www.cscc.edu. You will be notified of your acceptance and given further instructions regarding required placement examinations in math, reading and writing. New students may enter the dietetic technician program at the beginning of any quarter. Before enrolling, the student should meet with the program director to discuss the program of study and course selection. The applicant must be a high school graduate or possess a GED equivalency. Before participating in practicum courses, the student must complete a health record documenting freedom from TB, current immunizations and physical limitations.


Recommended High School Courses:
It is recommended that students entering the dietetic technician program should have taken high school chemistry, biology, algebra, and English12. If these courses have not been a part of the student’s high school curriculum within the last 5 years, it may be necessary to complete preparatory classes at Columbus State Community College before enrolling in courses in the dietetic technician curriculum. This can be determined upon completion of the Columbus state Community College placement examination and by consulting with the dietetic technician program director.
