Each quarter, the Mathematics Department offers some of our MATH 102 (Beginning Algebra I), MATH 103 (Beginning Algebra II) or MATH 104 (Intermediate Algebra)
course sections in a "computer based learning" format.
Most of your work in this course will be completed on the computer, with your instructor occasionally delivering a traditional lecture. Tests will still be in the traditional paper and pencil form, and your instructor may assign on-line quizzes, traditional paper and pencil quizzes, and out-of class assignments. You will be required to use the TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator, which may be purchased at either the CSCC
Bookstore or from many electronics and department stores in the Columbus area.
The Bookstore also has a limited number of TI-83 and TI-84 graphing calculators that may be leased for $25 per quarter. Headphones are required. Most Walkman-type headphones should work.
It is very important to attend this class on the first scheduled day of the quarter. In addition to reviewing the syllabus and classroom procedures, you will be given instructions on how to log on to the system and how to begin to use the
program. You must purchase your
course packet from the bookstore and bring it with you on the first day of class. When you go to the bookstore, look for a cardboard package with the logo "My
Math Lab" This cardboard package contains an access code that will enable you
to access the course content, textbook, and student manuals. Note: you will NOT
need to purchase a textbook! If you do not have the access kit you will
not be able to begin the course. Traditional students use a purple-and-white,
hard-cover textbook. Note the difference between the two packages when you are
shopping at the bookstore. The ISBN number for Course Compass-My Math Lab is
0-13-147894-X.
If you shop for your books at the CSCC On-Line bookstore, simply enter the course you registered for (MATH 102/103/104).
The section number of your specific
My Math Lab course will appear, along with the title. Just click on the package that is listed for your
My Math Lab section.
If you do not have a computer available off-campus, there are opportunities to complete your assignments here on campus using one of the Mathematics Department's computer labs. Experience with this type of content delivery has shown that one and a half or two hours of class
time, twice or three times a week, is NOT enough time for most students to complete the required assignments, and that extra time in the computer lab or working away from campus is necessary. In addition, you should be self-motivated, be able to work independently, and meet deadlines. If you are not an independent worker and tend to procrastinate on assignments, it is strongly suggested that you take mathematics in a more traditional setting, in an instructor-led class.
If you are a MATH 103 or MATH 104 student and you took MATH 102 or MATH 103 in a "traditional" setting at Columbus State, you will need to purchase
this access kit. The My Math Lab package is not available at other campus (OSU) bookstores.
There are many traditional sections of MATH 102, MATH 103, and MATH 104 that will be offered
this quarter. If you would like to change to one of these traditional sections you may
adjust your schedule online, or call the CSCC Telephone Information Center (287-5353) for assistance.
