Events Schedule

Trip Check List

1) For housing, we will be in the Penn State dormitories. Bring blanket, pillow, towel, change clothes, soap, shampoo, conditioner…. Where we will stay over night is a dorm, not a hotel. Penn State will only provide sheets and mattresses, and nothing else. Remember to bring pencils, eraser, and calculator; you may want to bring an alarm clock and an umbrella.

2) On Friday and Saturday night, the doors to the dormitories are to be locked at 11:00 pm. Especially on Friday night, there is mandatory "lights out" by midnight.

3) DO NOT LOSE the key to the dorm rooms. There will be a $40 charge by Penn State for any lost room keys.

4) Bring extra cash. Registration fee only covers breakfast and lunch on Saturday. You will pay yourselves for lunch and dinner on Friday, dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.

5) The chaperones will be: Alan Yang, Gary Gutman, Jon Graetz, Karen Rohde, Mark Musetti, Sherry Crawford-Eyen and Tim Cardinal.

Coach Cardinal will greet you at Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati; Coach Graetz, Coach Musetti, Prof. Gutman, Prof. Crawford-Eyen and I will meet you at Polaris Fashion Mall in Columbus; and Coach Rohde will meet you at the Lodi Outlets Mall.

6) If there are any problems or concerns, feel free to contact us by cell phone on the trip. The coaches’ cell phone numbers can be found in the “08 Trip Check List” document I sent to you via e-mail. In the case that you have not received the above mentioned document, send me an e-mail.

7) The bus ride will be quite long. You can prepare for the ‘Song Contest’, watch DVD’s, read books, or whatever. There also is the Saturday night free time. So you are encouraged to bring cards, games, books, headphones, DVDs, Frisbees, etc. You may also want to bring a camera, so you can take photos of you and your friends having great fun.

Ohio ARML FAQs

Q: How can I join Ohio ARML?
A: Mostly, if you score high on OCTM, AMC, or Ohio Math League, you will be invited to join Ohio ARML. Among these competitions, only OCTM provides Ohio ARML with participants’ personal contact information. Therefore, if your school does not participate in OCTM, it is suggested that you contact Prof. Alan Yang at Columbus State Community College.

Some students get in through their school's or district's recommendations. Teachers, Gifted Coordinators, or Gifted Services teachers, especially from districts (or schools) that do not actively participate in math competitions, may also recommend students. Those wishing to nominate students should submit the appropriate information to Prof. Alan Yang at: Math Department, Columbus State Community College, 550 E. Spring Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215.

Ohio ARML members who still are eligible will get the first round of invitations in February. Sometime in mid March, the next round of invitations will be sent out. If needed, another round of invitations will be sent out in early April.

Q: What kind of time commitment is required?
A: The competition usually takes place on either the last Saturday in May or the first Saturday in June. The Friday before and Sunday after the competition are devoted entirely to travel. For example, this year (2008), the whole trip will be May 30-June 1; May 31st will be the actual competition day while May 30th and June 1st will be travel days. There also will be at least two practices, one in April and one in May. They will be held at Columbus State and will run from 10AM-2:30PM. You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from these practices.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: The fee will be approximately $175, which covers registration, lodging, breakfast and lunch on the competition day, bus rental fee, team t-shirt, lunches at practices, etc. The cost however does not include the meals on both of the travel days, or the dinner on the competition day. You will need to bring some extra money with you for the trip.

Q: Where is the contest held? How do we get there?
A: The competition will be at Penn State and we will ride a bus there. There will be at least three stops for drop-off and pick-up near Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. Last year, the three stops were: Sycamore High School, 7400 Cornell Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242; Polaris Fashion Mall, 1500 Polaris Pkwy, Columbus, OH 43240; Prime Outlet Mall at Lodi, 9911 Avon Lake Road, Burbank, OH 44214.

Q: What is the schedule for competition day?
A: The competition Saturday usually goes:

6:10 -7:40 AM Breakfast
8:30 - 8:50 AM Team Round
8:55 - 9:55 AM Power Question
10:35 - 11:50 AM Individual Round
12:00 - 1:30 PM Lunch
1:45 - 2:20 PM Relay Round
2:20 PM – Tie Breaker, Super Relay, Song Contest Final, Awards Ceremony

Q: What are the rules for the competition?
A: Officially, there are four rounds: Team Round, Power Question, Individual Round, and Relay Round. In the Team Round, there are 10 questions and each team is allowed 20 minutes to submit one set of answers. For the Power Question, there are 10 proof-based questions, and each team is allowed an hour. Each team is given a stack of official Answer Sheets, which are carbon papers. The answers (the proofs) are written on the white papers. The team captain submits the answers (the white copies) to the proctor and keeps the carbon copies (the yellow copies). Calculators are allowed in both Team Round and Power Question.

For the Individual Round, there are four sets of questions. Each set consists of two questions, and each individual is given 10 minutes to submit his or her answers. For the Relay Round, each team is divided into five groups of three. Each person in a group is assigned a different question. In order for the second student to answer his or her question, he or she will need the first student’s answer. The answer is known as “TNYWR,” or “the number you will receive." Likewise, the third student will need the second student’s answer to answer his or her question. Because only the answer of the third person’s question counts, only the third person needs to submit the answer. There are two sets of three questions, and students are given six minutes for each set. Answers can be submitted twice, at the three-minute mark or at the six-minute mark. If answers are submitted at both the 3 and 6 minute marks, the first answer is replaced. Only answers may be passed between students. However, answers can only be passed from the first student to the second, and the second to the third: not vice versa. No calculator is allowed during either the Individual Round or the Relay Round. No cell phones are allowed in the room during any testing.

Q: How many teams there are for Ohio ARML? How are the team members selected?
A: Ohio sent two teams to ARML in 2005 and 2006, and three teams in 2007. The number of teams depends on the level of interest. More teams will be formed if there are more participants. However, only one coach bus has been rented during each of the past years. Considering that the capacity of the bus is 56 people, a maximum of three teams (45 students) can be expected. The team selection is based on a composite of the following factors: OCTM, AMC, Math League scores, Individual Round scores from the practices, and past ARML contest scores. Only when two students’ credentials are deemed equal, seniority, especially ARML seniority, will become a factor.

Q: I would really like to join Ohio ARML, but I have a schedule conflict. What options do I have?
A: If the ARML contest conflicts with SAT’s test date, you can take the SAT on an alternate test day. For details, go to ARML’s website, at www.arml.com, and follow the link “SAT Information.” College Board has an SAT Program Alternate Test Day Policy that allows ARML’s participants to take an SAT test on an alternate day. If you decide to take advantage of this program, because the rescheduling needs to be done through your school, here is a recommended procedure: sign up for whatever SAT test you plan to take, print out a copy of the information obtained through the “SAT Information” link, bring it to your school’s administrator responsible for scheduling the SAT, and ask him/her to contact the College Board to arrange an alternate day for your test.

If the ARML schedule conflicts with your graduation events schedule, we’ll work with you to find a solution. For example, the bus schedule may be adjusted to accommodate your schedule, or the cost can be adjusted if traveling on your own is the only solution, etc.

Q: What should I bring for the trip?
A: For housing we will stay in Penn State dormitories. Bring a blanket, pillow, towel, change of clothes, toiletries, etc. We will be staying in a dormitory, not a hotel. Penn State will only provide sheets and mattresses; nothing else. Remember to bring pencils, erasers, and a calculator; you may also want to bring an alarm clock.

Additionally, the bus ride is quite long and there also will be free time Saturday night. You are therefore encouraged to bring cards, games, books, headphones, DVDs, Frisbees, etc.
