Q: What are the responsibilities of a legal assistant?
 
A: A legal assistant performs many of the same tasks as a lawyer, except for the actual practice of law (setting fees, giving legal advice, and presenting cases in court). The duties of a legal assistant vary with his or her experience. For more information, see  Legal Assistant Profession.
 Q Where does a legal assistant work?
  A: Legal assistants have the option of working in a variety of employment settings: corporations, private law firms, administrative agencies, courts, government agencies, community legal service projects, and insurance companies. 
Q: What skills are needed of a person who wants to become a legal assistant?
 
A: A person’s ability to handle problems logically, maintain confidentiality, and to communicate with different types of people, both orally and in writing, are a few of the skills needed. For more information, see Legal Assistant Profession.  .
 Q: What does the job outlook hold for legal assistants?
 A: Legal assisting is considered one of the fastest growing occupations in the country. It is estimated that this tremendous growth will continue well into the year 2005. 
Q: Once I receive my degree, do I need to be licensed or certified?
 
A: Licensing is being considered by several states, but it is not required in Ohio at the present time. Certification is voluntary and is available through the National Association of Legal Assistants and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations. 
 Q: What degrees are offered in legal assisting?
 A: An Associate of Applied Science degree in Legal Assisting, an Associate of Technical Studies degree in Legal Medical Consulting, and a Departmental Certificate in Workers’ Compensation. 
Q: How long will it take me to get my degree?
 
A: The programs are designed to be completed within two years of full-time study, although most students attend Columbus State on a part-time basis. The added convenience of week-end and evening classes plus off-campus locations makes getting a degree even easier. For more information, see  Plan of Study and www.cscc.edu].

Q: Will I be placed in a job after graduation?
 
A: Although it is not guaranteed, many practicum experiences lead to full-time employment. Columbus State also offers job placement assistance through its Career Services department. For more information, see INTERNSHIPS
